I've had conversations with the directors of the film in question. They did NTO sign a no distribute contract. The only thing close to it is that one of the creators sent a letter to them promising he wouldn't distribute it, but this was after LEGO (...) (24 years ago, 29-Mar-01, to lugnet.animation)

I think people are missing a few key points in this discussion. Consider your average movie or television show... some of the comments made in this thread have suggested that you can't use a company's product in a movie without express permission. (...) Hey everyone. I don't usually post and I'm usually pretty passive when the TLC does something to tick everyone off around here. But this time they have gone too far. Unless you 1) use the LEGO logo; 2) present the film as official production of TLC; 3) use LEGO products in the endorsement of something else, TLC has no right to say what can and can't be done with their products. They may have provided materials, but the creators did not sign a contract stating they would not distribute it because of this. I hate to argue this point too finely, but providing the materials has nothign to do with the copyright of the words or (...) (24 years ago, 27-Mar-01, to lugnet.animation)

Actually, I would say it's much, much different. I think a better analogy would be that if you bought Play-doh and made an animated film, certainly Fischer-Price (or whoever makes PLay-Doh) would not have the right to suppress your film.
