I think it's specifically the multiple ":" characters. RFC 1738 mentions ":"
as a reserved character -- that is, when it occurs in the scheme-specific
part of a URL (URLs being <scheme>:<scheme-specific-part>, of course) it
should *only* be used in a scheme-specific special way. Otherwise it should
be encoded.
Of course, in the real world, a lot of sites do exactly what you're doing;
I'm surprised IE has a problem.
