I had the same problem. I already tried 2 aproaches: 1) One motor "slides" the second one to key positions where its small gear connects to gears in separate axles. Actually, additional to this, it seems to be caused by colouring of keywords. The drop zone ride in the Great America ride across the street uses magnetic effects, without mechanic contact. Not reproducible with Lego... Braking the fall directly is probably not easy. How about: 5) Sell the kits as they are (you ought to get between $100 and $200 per set) and then take some of the profit and buy some propellers from someone with spare ones (surely someone has some spares -- they were available as a parts pack (...)
