All,
As you know, I work both with you and with colleagues inside the LEGO Company.
My efforts internally include a large bit of “training and introduction” about
AFOLs. Projects like the “AFOLs” comic are meant to help educate my colleagues
about who the AFOLs are, and why they do what they do.
In an effort to help fill out my “toolbox”, I really need your help.I get
questions in almost every meeting like “so what’s the average age” or “how much
do they typically spend in a year”. The answers to these questions have been
estimated based on several Brickfest surveys, Shop At Home surveys, and a bit of
gut feel.
I need your help in collecting deeper, richer answers to some of the basics
about who you are. In an effort to pull this off, I’ve put together an survey
using the LEGO MyOpinions functionality. You can find it at:

The survey is relatively short, and should take you less than 5 minutes. Please
please take a few minutes to fill it out as honestly as you can. Please be as
truthful as you can in this session. Exaggerating the numbers to beef up your
stats, or trying to make a statement about color change won’t help AFOLs, it
will only hurt. Only one time through per person.
Anyway, thanks in advance for your help on this. Once we’ve gotten the data
back, this will be a HUGE new tool for me to use in my efforts to spread AFOL
concepts and news through the company.

| (...) Just a little imperfectness with the survey: At one point you ask, if any of the events have been visible in the media, i.e. TV/Radio/Newpaper/None of the Above. | Thanks for the opportunity, Jake and keep up the good work. I truly believe that we AFOLs have been underestimated by TLC, so this is a great opportunity to let them know who we are. | Done. I think your people will be surprised at how few of my Lego purchases are made at Shop @ Home or retail. (75% are made at eBay and BrickLink). I suspect there are many AFOLs with a similar percentage. (20 years ago, 15-Mar-04, to lugnet.lego, lugnet.general, FTX)

| Another problem that no-one seems to have mentioned. My group (The Brickish.org) has appeared on television but if I choose to say that it has then next question is how many times I have appeared and doesn't give me option to say none. | I found some of the Questions difficult to answer. Is posting to lugnet considered "belonging to a lego user group", or is this just refering to membership? I put down my avg $10,000/yr spending up to 2004, but my 2004 spending will be MUCH, MUCH lower once all the 2003-previous sets are gone from retail. Maybe (...) | Hey Jake, Some vague points in the survey: Q2 asks if I'm in a local or virtual user group. If I say "both", meaning that in addition to taking part in LUGOLA (local group) I'm also a member of Lugnet, Classic-Castle.com, and FBTB.net forums, the (...) | Jake, I filled it out. Something you really (and I do mean REALLY) need to take into account is the multiplier between how much I spent and the relative MSRP of the same product. | I have now answered as I think it is my duty. Though a few things are not clear/uncorrect: 1. Member of a LUG? I said yes, as I am using lugnet. Or do you mean a local club? | Apart from what's already been mentioned; I had trouble with the hours per day question. There were alternatives like 1-2 and 3-4 but I estimate it to 2-3 hours per day. I took the lower number here. Hope to see the results later on! (20 years ago, 16-Mar-04, to lugnet.lego, lugnet.general)

| Jake, I have filled out your questions. But some important remarks: In the last years I spend aprox. 1200 Euro each year for LEGO. This year I will spend 0 Euro!
