All,
As you know, I work both with you and with colleagues inside the LEGO Company.
My efforts internally include a large bit of training and introduction about
AFOLs. Projects like the AFOLs comic are meant to help educate my colleagues
about who the AFOLs are, and why they do what they do.
In an effort to help fill out my toolbox, I really need your help.I get
questions in almost every meeting like so whats the average age or how much
do they typically spend in a year. The answers to these questions have been
estimated based on several Brickfest surveys, Shop At Home surveys, and a bit of
gut feel.
I need your help in collecting deeper, richer answers to some of the basics
about who you are. In an effort to pull this off, Ive put together an survey
using the LEGO MyOpinions functionality. You can find it at:
http://exapp005.informative.com/servlet/efocus?DST=LEGO_AFOL
The survey is relatively short, and should take you less than 5 minutes. Please
please take a few minutes to fill it out as honestly as you can. Please be as
truthful as you can in this session. Exaggerating the numbers to beef up your
stats, or trying to make a statement about color change wont help AFOLs, it
will only hurt. Only one time through per person.
Anyway, thanks in advance for your help on this. Once weve gotten the data
back, this will be a HUGE new tool for me to use in my efforts to spread AFOL
concepts and news through the company.
Thanks!
Jake

You could specify the currency (US Dollar?) when asking the amount spent.

Will you ever release the resulting stats to the AFOL community ?

Jake,
One question I thought was a little tricky to answer was How many people attend
these events? Because I filled in that my favorite LEGO community events
were both LUG Meetings & Train Shows. The answer as to how many people attend
is different. 1,000s of people come to the train shows and see MichLTCs work,
but only 20-30 people attend the meetings.
Also this quesiton - Outside of discussions with other community members, about
how many family members, friends, and others do you talk to about your LEGO
creations and ideas over the course of a year? - At first I thought just about
my family, friends and co-workers and that was a smallish number. But if I
include all the people I talk to at Train Shows, then the number rockets up.
Also I noticed that the question about dollars spent on LEGO was aimed at Sets
not necessarily parts bought at Pick-A-Brick or on Bricklink, etc. My amount
spent on just sets (last year, anyways) was about 50% of my total spending.
This year (with the new greys) its likely to be only 15%.
I made my best guesses that I could on ambigous questions and finished the
survey. Good luck with the survey and I hope it helps you!

Just a little imperfectness with the survey:
At one point you ask, if any of the events have been visible in the
media, i.e. TV/Radio/Newpaper/None of the Above. If one of the media
types has been activated, the survey goes on asking how often oneself
was found in that particular media. Well, I know that the meeting in
Frechen last spring was on TV, but I wasn't (lucky TV!). Likewise, there
has been media exposure of 1000SteineLand, but I am in no position to
know or give details.
Maybe you should leave that out in the general AFOL survey and try to
find out what kind of media exposure the individual events had - and the
organisers will be in a better position to tell you about that.
With the question of where one spends the Lego budget - Brand stores and
Legoland shops are covered by "Retail", aren't they?
Yours, Christian

Good Job,
one point though, can we assume the amount we spend on lego each year is
expected in dollars as I can't add a currency sign to the value.

Thanks for the opportunity, Jake and keep up the good work.
I truly believe that we AFOLs have been underestimated by TLC, so this is a
great opportunity to let them know who we are. The majority of my purchases have
been through retail and Ive never done any other surveys, so Im pretty sure
Ive been below the radar to them.
I heartily encourage everyone to respond to this (including the lurkers out
there) as it will give Jake the info he needs to advocate on our behalf. This
poll is easy to do and unlike much of the Lego site, it runs fast even in
Netscape 4.78 on a Mac (mirabile dictu), so theres no excuse.
One thing to beware of, though. When it asks for a number it wont allow commas
or currency indicators, so just use the digits. (Hey, it took me a moment to
figure out why 5,000 wasnt considered a number.)
Thanks again, Jake. I hope we can help with this.
Peace and recognition,

Other than the already mentioned 'I assume this amount is in US dollars', I had
a couple of comments on the survey. You might want to have unemployed as an
option for the occupation. I noticed that one place I talk to people about LEGO
a great deal wasn't mentioned. That is in the LEGO aisle of stores. I
recommend sets, tell people about sales, how to order sets through S@H, etc.

I think your people will be surprised at how few of my Lego purchases are made
at Shop @ Home or retail. (75% are made at eBay and BrickLink). I suspect there
are many AFOLs with a similar percentage.

I found some of the Questions difficult to answer.
Is posting to lugnet considered belonging to a lego user group, or is this
just refering to membership?
I am currently a university student, and my answeres to some of the questions
would be totally different when Im away at school as when I am at Home.
Especially the amount of time I spend on lego related activities. I leave all
my lego at my pairents house when I am off at university, otherwise I would
never be able to get any schoolwork done. But when I go home, most of my spare
time is spent building with lego, or playing with it with my younger siblings.
Im assuming the question about how much we spend per year on average is
reffering to only those years we would be clasified as an AFOL.
At what point did I cease to be child fan of LEGO and become an AFOL? 18?
I have not completed the servey yet, so advice on how to answer some of these
questions would be quite helpfull.

I x-posted your message and a brief translation of the questionaire at the

And I filled in the questionaire of course. One thing is missing: The curreny
for the input of how much you spend on LEGO per year.
Hope it helps you (and us) to get a better AFOL understanding within the
company.

I filled it out, but it's not a truthful representation of my spending habits
anymore. I put down my avg $10,000/yr spending up to 2004, but my 2004 spending
will be MUCH, MUCH lower once all the 2003-previous sets are gone from retail.
Maybe I shouldn't have filled it out in this case? If someone reads into it that I
will spend $10K on 2004 sets, they will be SO wrong.

Hey Jake,
Some vague points in the survey:
Q2 asks if Im in a local or virtual user group. If I say both, meaning that
in addition to taking part in LUGOLA (local group) Im also a member of Lugnet,
Classic-Castle.com, and FBTB.net forums, the next question asks how many in the
group. In terms of the local group its in the range of 20-30 (based on who
Ive met at meetings), but in terms of the virtual group this is 100s (1000s?)
On favorite community sites, Id also include MOCpages, classic-castle.com,
and bzpower.net.
On purchasing, do you mean LEGO we buy for ourselves, the total amount spend on
LEGO for us (including gifts from family and friends sympathetic to our habits),
or the total amount we spent on LEGO (including gifts for others as we try to
spread the gospel of the Brick). Also, as others have said, the currency is not
mentioned. I assumed US $, but I could easily see people assuming Euros or
pounds etc. Also as others mentioned, you ask how much we spend on LEGO sets,
while most of my secondary market purchases, probably 50% of my purchases, are
of individual elements from Bricklink stores, and most of my shop@home purchases
(25% of my purchases) are of bulk bricks. I only buy actual sets in retail
stores. I assumed that you meant all LEGO elements rather than sets.

Jake,
I filled it out. Something you really (and I do mean REALLY) need to take into
account is the multiplier between how much I spent and the relative MSRP of the
same product. Stuff I buy is usually on clearance, so while I spent $XXXX, the
true MSRP amount would be more like $XXXX times (2, 3, 4 or 5). Many people here
buy that way also, so the actual dollar figures you get are very likely
understated (because you would want to normalize them to MSRP to get a better
feel for AFOL buying power). My point being that a normalized number would
better present what percentage of product going through retail is ending up with
AFOLs.

I did the same thing based on club appearances rather than personal
appearances.
Other questionable questions:
The "community LEGO sites you visit" only wanted you to list your top three,
which I did... but there were several sites not listed that I couldn't add
because they weren't in my top 3 but which should be there, eg peeron.com
and brickset.com
The Occupation choices don't list "self employed" which is really the only
way to describe me, I don't fit into any of the other boxes :-)

I have now answered as I think it is my duty. Though a few things are not
clear/uncorrect:
1. Member of a LUG?
I said yes, as I am using lugnet. Or do you mean a local club?
There are not enough around here for a club.
2. Radio/TV/Prints
Documentation of the show:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=52303
My show has been mentioned on radio, but I mysefl have not - dont know what to
answer! Therefore it has been on Raadio Ruut, but I had notthing to do with
that.
As for print - once I have created some information (see the link), but not
more. The local paper wrote about the show afterwards, but I have never seen it.
3.
How much do you spend on LEGO sets in an average year? (Please type in a number
and not a range)
What currency? Squared-Bricks?
I asume USD?
Still, I hope my information is useful

Apart from what's already been mentioned; I had trouble with the hours per day
question.
There were alternatives like 1-2 and 3-4 but I estimate it to 2-3 hours per day.
I took the lower number here.
Hope to see the results later on!

The interesting thing is also, that "per day" is not correct for me - more like
per week. It depends on a number of things, some days I might spend most of my
day on lego, but mostly I do not spend time on lego, that is some days I spend
anything from 10 min to 10 hours.
A number of hours per week would be better.

Jake,
I have filled out your questions. But some important remarks:
In the last years I spend aprox. 1200 Euro each year for LEGO.
This year I will spend 0 Euro! I will definitely do not buy an discoloured
bricks!
Most time I spend this year with my hobby is to write postings like this and
reading postings like this.
I have build just only some hours this year!
My hobby is kind of leaving me. And in some months perhaps I will realize
that LEGO is not my hobby anymore.
Change back the colours!
And I think it will be the last time, that I have filled out such questions.
Communication between LEGO and AFOLs for me is reduced to a single question:
WHEN will LEGO change back to the old colours. Just waiting for an answer!
No other things are of interest.

OK, I filled out the survey honestly, thanks for the chance to input again. But
where _can_ we make a statement about color change that might help the AFOL
position. I have already called Customer Service and mailed a long letter to
Susan Williams (with returned bley parts, unanswered after 6+ weeks). Plus I
have attempted to comment on the lego.com forums site and suggested that a forum
on color change be added (last time I managed to get in there there still wasn't
a forum on color change, but that was a while ago).
Is it worth my while to keep griping about the color issue to these (or other)
sources? Or once the system has heard from me one time on the issue it doesn't
want to hear from me again - and subsequent input from me is ignored?
BTW, you said at BrickFest PDX that there is no hope for old grey coming back -
is that still true? (I thought it rather ironic that that statement came
following a couple of glowing speaches about how much Lego listens to and cares
about AFOL's now, and about how 2003 was such a fantastic year for Lego and the
AFOL (which it was until late November). But I digress... sorry.)
Sorry if this sounds down - I know this issue affects you personally, too, and I
appreciate the work you do for the community!
-Matt :)

Well, it is not even every week I spend time with my lego - during summer I have
other things to do, but during the winder (sep-mar here) I build, the colder and
darker the more I build.
But it also depends on inspiration, waiting for bricklink order etc....
So I should could the hours for a year and divide it by 365,24 :-)
For my latest project I have a history list, I'll try to see how much time I
have spent on that one....

a bit of gut feel.
Please please take a few minutes to fill it out as honestly as you can.
Please be as truthful as you can in this session. Exaggerating the numbers to
beef up your stats, or trying to make a statement about color change wont
help AFOLs, it will only hurt. Only one time through per person.
Anyway, thanks in advance for your help on this. Once weve gotten the data
back, this will be a HUGE new tool for me to use in my efforts to spread
AFOL concepts and news through the company.
Thanks!

Jake, always a pleasure to help some one who works for TLC out. I took my
survey. I think that futuron would be a great space series to bring back. That
had some good peices that have made it through the years. I would like to make a
request for a couple pieces to be reintroduced.
1. The old city baseplates. The ones that were with the hospital, fire and
police stations. 2. The baseplates that were 16X6. They are great when making
bridges.
The third is just an idea. Now I know that TLC does not accpet ideas from
outside the company. However I think that it would be great to take the 15x15
baseplate, turn it blue and make it smooth in the center. Maybe 8 dots deep from
the outside and then smooth the rest of the way. It would be great when making
my fire/police/rescue superbase.
Thanks,
Larry

Huh? 15x15 baseplate? Did you mean to type 16x16, or were you referring to the
15-inch by 15-inch X-Large baseplate?
