Hey ya'all, my castle is nearing completion (pics soon), and my attention is
turning towards my surrounding town.  I was wondering if anybody had ideas for
making townspeople.  Any ideas or links?

Well There are many ways to make villagers some people use SW Bodies for
Villagers. They kind of look medevial or you could use Majisto and forestman
torsos or you could use the Peasants lego already supplied. Hope that helps!

As CJ said, SW characters make excellent peasants (Qui-gon, old Obi-wan...)

Jeff Stembel has a great minifig site with peasants among other things:

I would have to third the Star Wars figs especially the EP1 figs.  Here are a
list of all the torsos that I use in my Medieval town setup.

Qui-Gon Gin
Young Obi-Wan
Padme
Anakin
Jar Jar Binks
Gungan Soldier
Naboo Soldier (Flash Speeder pilot)
Darth Maul
Old Obi-Wan
Desert Luke
Jedi/Skiff Luke
Skiff Han

I also think Princes Leia and Vested Han will be good when they come out this
summer.

Here are some links.

My Castle Page.

Dave Eaton's Village.
http://www.suave.net/~dave/midtown2.html

The NELUG Dry Run.

I think you will see that the Peasants in these photos are primarily Star Wars
Figs.  Thanks to the Star Wars figs we can have a balanced Medieval society
instead of 20 king's 40 Soldier's and 2 peasants :-).

In addition to the aforementioned suggestions, there are a few Pirates torsos
that work pretty well in a Castle setting, but these have the problem that
they're not readily available either...

Like which torsos? I can't think of any in particular that fit.

Some Adventurers' torsos work. For some, they work if you remove the gun-
printing.

something about that in my HP.)

Heh heh heh!  >:-)

"Give in to the Dark Side!  It is your Destiny!"

This weekend, at the North Georgia Model Train Club Expo
(or whatever it's called) that was held here in Marietta,
just two or three miles from my apartment,
I traded some Lego parts with James and Kenny
(who were demo-ing their Lego trains stuff),
and I got a couple of the yellow-torso conductors.

I took these conductors' torsos,
scraped off the painting from the torsos,
put on each of them a plastic cloak, reversed,
switched their hands for black hands,
gave them each a space Wolfpack/Peasant Cowl/Hood,
and gave them each a hammer, turning them into Blacksmiths!
(Just like the old, old, classic Castle set # 6040
<sets:6040>...Hmmm, I wonder if this link will work for me?...)

I also some some other cool stuff [good loot].
All in all, a rather profitable weekend.

LOL! I dunno, I'm just not willing to give in. I know I'm good! ;-)

Wow! Great idea! I was wondering what to do with that one, I took it off my
trade list 'cause yellow torsos are too good to give up. That's excellent!

No, 'cause you hafta write 'set:' and not 'sets:'.

Mine was nice too. My inn is coming along nicely and I spent the past three
hours cramming while listening to music. Believe it or not, that actually
inspired me and I've got some great storyline ideas flowing now!

(OMG, I can't believe I said that. No, chem and math didn't inspire me... it
was the music... really! ;-)

I was thinking of the white shirt w/green vest 'fig mostly.  The Imperial
Armada torsos aren't bad either if you want to be a bit later in the Castle
period.  The one with the blue coat and brownish-greenish shirt could work
as well, maybe as a wealthy merchant.

And of course, any torso can do pretty well if you cover it up with armor. 8)
I've been lucky enough to get some sets of the old removable armor, and I
snagged lots of Samurai Swordsmen on sale so I have a decent supply of the
Japanese style as well.

This one is in 1747 which is available from S@H (and is on the page where if
you order 5 or more sets from that page, you get them for 90 cents off each
set [though you may need to order in multiples of 5 or 10, so far everything
I've ordered has been multiples of 10...]).

You could probably do it in a few methods (not sure which one Eric uses),
these are just two:

a. using friction pegs and beams.
b. using hinges (base) and <part:3938 (top).

Attach the roof plate to either of these, and the other part (either beam or
hinge) to the wall.

Hey, your site is really great. Don't underestimate yourself. And it has the
most concentrated minifig population I've seen around, except for Craig's (and
I'm not sure about that either... I think you might have more *castle*
minifigs).
I could, of course, ref to Craig's site, but I didn't because:
a. He doesn't have 'ny peasants
b. his site is the best, but it would be overwhelming to a newbie... when I
first saw it (some 1.5/two years ago?) I remember being really impressed. I
was also thrown off, tho, by the massive pages and heck of a lot of pictures
(I had a reeeealy slow connexion back then).
c. Making a newbie suddenly aware of the Dark Side before he/she is mature
enough to handle that (;-) can result in extreme side effects (such as going
to Clone brands for cool parts - we don't want that now do we? ;-).

Please link to the main page, though.  The other stuff is kinda interesting,
too (and it ups the counter! :) ).

Oki-doke, I'll do that next time!

(I love those counters, don't you? Mine boost my ego soooo much... even though
I know they count every time you revisit the main page, I can't help being
awed by the enormous number (over 2000!)... so when I'm in a rational mood, I
check the side pages. Going by the best and oldest ones (Scar, Royalty) I've
been visited over 450 times! Wow!)

ps, you don't have to call yourself a newbie.... ;-)

Yeah, but newbies are cool!  They're great for teasing!  ;)

I know! Whaddaya think I did up there?!

(This is a joke of course, Rob, don't take it personally! :-)

All seriousness aside, teasing newbies is mean. (I can't believe I just did it
myself :-) We should only tease the oldies (1) because they know we're just
kidding!
Just like a newbie might be scared if Larry in all his glory would run down
his/her 8-wide train... while John Neal knows it's just fun! (2)

(1) Hey, I think neither one of these (newbie vs. oldie) are offensive but we

Hmm... if I'm not a newbie, then you sure aren't either. I've been lurking on
lugnet since it started, but only really started posting around September this
year. I feel like I know everyone because I've read everyone's posts, saw
everyone's sites (well, almost everyone's) and feel connected to a lot of
people. Being a newbie is, I think, a state of mind, which might/might not be
connected to how long you've been on lugnet. You can *feel* like an old-timer
even if you've only been on lugnet for a month, IMO...

Oh, and BTW, happy b-day!

Erik,

I just looked at your peasant houses.  I really like the way you used plates
for roofs, but having built very few MOC's, I've never used anything but roof
bricks.  How do you set that up?

First off I have to give credit to Dave Eaton once again this is really his
design.

http://www.suave.net/~dave/midtown2.html

But I can sure try and explain how its done. :-).  I have read several of the
posts writen here by Shiri and Jeff and I will try and address some of their
points as well.

First there are no hinges or Technic pegs involved at all.  This system is so
simple you are probably going to scream.  Each side of the roof is one big
plate made up of several other plates held together on the bottom with other
plates.  The only thing here is that you want to try and keep the connecting
plates 2 studs from any side/edge.  If that is impossible it can be done
leaving only 1 stud from the side but that is as close to the edge as you want
to come.

Second the sides of the houses are just one stud wide and for the slope we use
1x2 black 45 degree slopes.  The roof plates rest on these slopes so the house
and roof are the same stud width.  Now just rest the plates on the slopes and
you are done.  :-)  Oops that plate just slide right off didn't it.  One more
step.

Third, this part is very unscientific.  You need a brick usually a 1xX brick (I
like using 1x6's).  You attach this to the bottom of the roof plate near the
bottom to keep the plate from sliding off.  Where you attach the brick depends
on the slope of the roof and how big the plate is.  This is basically trial and
error.  Just remember to use the holes as well because this can help you fine
tune how the plate is positioned.  You want the to plates to be as close as you
can get at the peak of the roof but you will still get a little gap no matter
what so your peasants will get wet if it rains :-).  (It never rains in my LEGO
world so that is not an issue).

I hope that helps.  Dave E. might have more insight into the roof design but
this is what works for me.

I think you will see that the Peasants in these photos are primarily Star
Wars Figs.  Thanks to the Star Wars figs we can have a balanced Medieval
society instead of 20 king's 40 Soldier's and 2 peasants :-).

If that is impossible it can be done
leaving only 1 stud from the side but that is as close to the edge as you want
to come.

Cheater.  :P
Anyway, I wasn't trying to descibe how *you* did your houses, I was describing
how I've done houses in the past.  :)

You said exactly everything I'd'a said! It works fairly well as a design, other
than the fact that the roofs fall off if you go carrying them around and tip
them over or anything-- but if you just leave 'em be they're perfectly secure!
Although actually, now that I DO think of it, back to the 'underlying' layer of
plates (beneath the top tan layer)-- I usually make sure the "lip" of the top
layer is 1 stud wide on each edge so that the roof won't slide from side to
side... I think you had mentioned simply to keep any lip at all 1 or 2 studs
wide... But then again, if you're using 2x2 45 degree slopes instead of 1x2 45
degree slopes, then you need to space the lip accordingly (needless to say :)
Anyway, that tends to keep any side to side motion down to a minimum...

BTW, I'd suggest you (and anyone else out there) to add a link from your side
pages to the main page. That way, people who are referred to a side page can
see the rest of the site.

I do that, and it ups the counter too, because the people click on the link
instead of on their 'back' button. That counts them again... Sure, the results
are then skewed, but it makes one feel good about their site ;-) And if I want
to see normal, unaffected results I check the counters on the side pages.

True.  I'd feel like a newbie if I got into robotics more... I think you

Thanks for everything.  I pulled up my fig tray and began putting some stuff
together.  Here's what I built:

Jeff Stembel's Lich
2 Innkeepers
1 Bartender
1 Prisoner
1 Smithy
1 Wizard
2 Mercenaries
9 People to walk around
7 Merchants (2 to sell stuff, 5 shipmen)
3 Pirates to rob from the merchants
Total-27 Mini-figs for the village, and the Lich (hope you don't mind Jeff)

I basically used all the stuff available to me, including forestmen, wolfpack
men, pirates, adventures, and star wars bodies to make my figs.   That still
leaves me with my black knights, crusaders, the bulls, and King Leo's new
army.  I'm pretty happy.

Also, I only call myself a newbie because I'm new to Lugnet and I recently
came out of a three year dark age.  I've actually been building since I was
about 3 :)

If it's any consolation, I never do either. I asked for a metroliner for my
15th birthday, about 10 months in advance... my parents said they'll get me
one IF I'm still into lego at 15 (they didn't believe I would be!). Well, my
15th birthday came and went, guess what I didn't get...

From the second I started buying my own sets, I haven't gotten any lego
presents (except for some distant friends that wanted to buy me a gift so my
dad said 'lego'. Of course, they shopped by age range and got me some cyber-
master sets. Isn't that fun). OK, now I'm being sarcastic.

Well, if you're talking about camera/photos of your lego stuff it probably
fits best in lugnet.publish. The best way to move a thread without people
losing track of it is:

a. In 'Newsgroups' you write the new NG in *addition* to the current one
b. in 'Followup-To' you write the new NG
c. somewhere in your post you mention that followups are set to the second
group.*

Followups direct any replies to your post straight into the second NG.
