You could probably make a larger truss - yes - but a suspension
bridge will always be able to be made longer - and from less LEGO.
The counterweight and bending tower problem is easily fixed at the
same time the span length is increased. ie. take the suspension
bridge with a one meter deck on either end and a five meter deck
between the pillars - 7 meters overall, but with the problems you
described. Now add an extra meter and a half on either end - the
overall span is up to 10 meters, the towers are straight, (because
they're balanced) and no rolls of pennies are needed. ;-)

I would have loved to have seen that in person. Lots of old classic
LEGO and all the added fun and great backdrops of an outdoor layout.
