John,

Well I guess the first thing I'd have to do (like many others) is hord all
the 9V stuff I could get my hands on, mainly track, engines and wheel sets.
Really I don't think I would "bail" on trains, in the past year and a half I
haven't bought a LEGO train set and used the set as designed. Most sets are
just sources of more trains parts for MOCs.

I would be curious to see if something new would replace the 9v series, I
think if they had a new type of train, LEGO would be eager to promote it and
make a varity of interesting sets to get everyone on board.

As for the NMRA, I have really found it to be a big inspiration in my LEGO
train projects and have enjoyed going to the meetings. Also I try to take a
LEGO version of whatever the monthly theme of the month is for the meetings.
Some of them have become very big challenges. I didn't make it to last
month's meeting, and good for me I didn't. I don't know how I was going to
make a weather boxcar / rolling stock out of LEGO.

Harvey-

Thanks for resurrecting this thread.  I had to go back and read all of it and
found it all very interesting, especially in the light of this recent post • which
went by mostly unnoticed:  http://news.lugnet.com/trains/?n=7201

Now, I realize that being discontinued can mean the end of the 9 volt system • with
a *new* system to replace it, or just plain death.  Frankly, I'd love to see • TLC
go back to the drawing board and start from square one.  I wish that they • would
consult us FOLTs first so that they don't muck it up!

NOW, let's suppose for the sake of argument that TLC in fact *does* can the 9
volt Train theme.  I am curious as to everybody's reaction.  Would you bail on
trains altogether?  Would it not affect you at all?  I know what I'd do, but • I'd
like to hear from others first...

There is a lot of debate going on right now about the perceived future
of LEGO trains.  Many fear TLC will abandon the theme and that they will
be left high and dry.  Some fear that those fearing the demise of the
theme will bring in non-LEGO elements into the fray thereby diluting the
all-LEGO component currently being observed by most FOLTs.

Much of this discussion, IMO, reveals the ambiguity of the LEGO train
hobby.  What is it that we really want?  I used to think that I wanted
to be recognized and respected as a model railroad builder in a
particular medium in and among the MRR community.  Now I don't.  It was
Steve Barile who suggested the International LEGO Train Conference that
got me to thinking.  Why did I want to be a part of the NMRA?  Other
than the recognition, what else was there for me and my LEGO trains?
Nothing.

That is why I think that we should be forming the LTMA (LEGO Train
Modelers Association) and begin doing our own thing.  Have our own
shows.  Promote LEGO trains.  Promote LEGO.  Create our own newsletter.
Maybe some day a magazine.  I think this has the best chance of catching
TLC's attention.  Perhaps they would want to become involved in some
manner in such an organization.  Being apart of anything else is
extraneous and not about what we are about-- building and enjoying LEGO
trains.

Comments?

I know this is an old topic, but I was in the Navy at the time and didn't • even
know about LEGO trains. I used to be a member of the NMRA, but I can say • from
my experience that NMRA folks kinda look down on those who don't 1.Get their
stuff from Walthers catalogs 2.Count every damn bolt and rivet, and 3.If • it's
not HO or N scale, you're out!

I fully support the idea of a separate LEGO train association. Bring all the
various LEGO train clubs under one roof, so to speak. But none of the
ridiculous politics that characterize the NMRA should be included either
(remember, we're supposed to have fun doing this-not determining • the 'purity'
of others' creations. I simply combined my two greatest loves in life • (trains
and LEGOs), then I sought others out who did the same. So if theres others • out
there who still share this idea, you can count me in. -Harvey Henkelman
