I agree with you completely.

If the demand is truly there for better models/instructions, one could
even make a business of it.  Call it "Virtual LEGO Sets".   Warning...the
rest of this message is only half-serious...

Probably could generate a really nice web interface where someone could
select the theme(s) they are interested, perhaps enter the sets they own
(remembered in the site database and accessed by a cookie).  The site
could then compute inventories and determine which Virtual Sets could be
built from the customer's existing parts.  If the customer liked a
different Virtual Set the site could figure out what additional parts were
required.

Instructions could take a variety of forms.  Perhaps LDRAW files and/or
rendered 3D images.  Probably would need to take some measure to minimize
piracy.

Instructions could either be delivered electronically, or for those who
don't like large downloads, a custom CD-R could be burned with all of
their selections.

The Virtual Lego Sets business could also act something like a publisher -
accepting models from other builders and splitting the proceeds between
the business and the creator.  That would allow the "best of the best" to
be made available as Virtual Lego Sets.
