Thanks for the info, I'm afraid it was a case engaging fingers before google!

On the subject of the two main loco manufacturers whats the main design features
that help differentiate them? I was looking at photos and although I can see
that obviously the locos are diffent I couldn't work out the 'signatures' that
allow you say, 'thats EMD' or 'thats GE'

Good question. If you'd asked me 20 years ago I would have told you about the
shape of cab roofs, the way that the radiators flared, the pattern of fans on
the roof and a few other things... but today? Maybe I'm old but I have a harder
time telling them apart now than I used to. Maybe there's more variance. Maybe
they've blurred together more.

Looking at cabs is still helpful I feel. If you're talking a full width nose (or
"comfort") cab, the GE has "notched" corner slopes that are distinctive compared
to EMD (you have to look at two side by side to see it though...), at least
IMHO.

But maybe some other people have better answers.

There is also a book that Kalmbach puts out called the "Diesel Spotter's Guide"
which is quite good. My copy is 20+ years old so doesn't help much with new
stuff.
