Lime Green fire tricks were big in the 70's.
Sometime back in the late 60's early 70's someone did a study and came to
the conclusion that people see the Lime Green colors better in traffic.
As a consequence, ALOT of city's painted their trucks lime green.
Here are some trucks form the city I grew up in from the 70's

Sometime in the 80's someone else did s study and claimed that the color of
the truck did not matter...but what was more important was the lights, and
the amount and placement of reflective materials on the truck....so...as a
result most city's went back to the classic red color...or a variant...red
body/white roof....or the growing popular "Chicago" style, red body/bl;ack
roof www.massmetrofire.org/images/SomervilleE7Met.jpg

I personally prefer the black over red combo, and have changed my trucks on
my lego fire site to reflect that

O.K. now that I've chastised you for spreading gossip... let's talk about
this little tidbit.

Please, someone.... say it ain't so!  A black and lime green fire truck?
The only picture I could find that was even *close* to this description was on:

http://www.airportfire.com

(Then click on 'Crashtruck Photos' and then on 'Photo 2'.  They've disabled
right clicking so I can't figure out how to deep link to the photo I want.)

Then look at the photo 2nd down in the right hand column.  Some arguments
could be made that this is lime green with black accents... or that it's
just a poor color pic of a yellow truck.  Either way, a truck like that just
doesn't look right in that shade of green.

Why was it so hard to find a lime green fire truck?  Simple.  Very few are
painted that way.  Red, yellow and yes even white are about the only colors
you're likely to see.  Cruise through the airportfire.com site and you can
see why.  The colors work well given the nature of the work those trucks do.

Frankly, if LEGO is going to make a fire truck I do hope long and careful
consideration goes into making it a traditional red color.

As far as I'm concerned there are only a few things in life that *must* be a
certain way.  Baseball must be played with wooden bats.  Books must be
printed on real paper.  And firetrucks must be red. (1)

Here's hoping that the unnamed source didn't properly identify the color of
the unsubstantiated claim regarding the phantom fire truck.  :)

(1)  Though some airport crash trucks (ARFF's) look absolutely brilliant in
yellow.  And there are some who debate the safety factors behind having
rescue vehicles painted red vs. yellow.  Each can be said to be more visible
under certain conditions.

(...) No offense to you personally Robert, but I sometimes wish that those people who "can't reveal their sources" would simply not post the information at all. I realize that sometimes they are just trying to be helpful, or to scoop a story before (...) (22 years ago, 4-Jan-03, to lugnet.technic)
