One idea has crept into my mind.  Maybe, it's just one of those years?

I thought back to the mid 80's and looked at some of my US LEGO brochures to
check out what was out then. As I remembered it, Technic was rather thin.
One important note: this is the US market I'm talking of, not Europe.

1983:  a good year, 8860 auto chassis, 8845 dune buggy, 8847 dragster, 8848
power truck, 951 bulldozer, 948 go-cart, 8844 helicopter, and 8841 desert
racer.

1984:  models take a big slide, 8860, 8847, 8845, and 8841 are all the
models available but the universals come to market (8020,8030 and 8050),
some hope.

1985: only the 8847, 8845, and 8841 are the only models left, 8860 auto
chassis gone, but the 8040 pneumatic universal comes to the US.

1986:  8847 and 8841 still here but the 8845s get replaced by the 8842
go-cart.  8055 and 8035 replace 8030 and 8050.

Certainly, LEGO's world market has grown a lot since then but maybe it's
just one of those stagnant times for LEGO where they're just catching their
breath.

Just a theory.

(...) Well, my answer is buy Meccano instead ... they have some nice sets for reasonable prices. Meccano Motion System 50 Re-use 599 Meccano building pieces to make up to 50 different models with this sensational kit. Includes a 6 Volt motor and (...)
