Actually, the standard issue trooper battle droids ALWAYS wear the backpacks.
None of the other droid types wear them at any time. Most of the droids that
you see on the DCS & all droids on the other TF ships are either security,
pilots or commanders, whenever you do see a trooper, they certainly have the
backpacks.

I basically only needed an OOM-9 (the droid chief commander in the Naboo
campaign), so I just painted the back of a battle droid head yellow, then added
a yellow circle (painted) in the hollow part of the chest. Given how cheaply
these can be obtained, I figured it wasn't much of a loss.

You could easily paint the others as well: For security, use matte rust red
color & paint the shoulders down to the "crossbar". For pilots, use matte
medium blue & the very same crossbar & the upper parts of the shoulders. There
are plenty of web references that can serve as guides in doing this.

Yellow backpacks, on the other hand, won't do. Commanders just can't be seen
walking around with backpa

(...) <humour> Security are painted red? No wonder they're so easily destroyed...they're Star Wars Redshirts! <gd&r> </humour> Now let's not start *that* set of comparisons...;) best (and tangentially,) LFB (24 years ago, 17-Apr-00, to lugnet.starwars)
