Sorry, I got mine in Naboo Swamp; check

where you can just see the plates on their back. Are there any Ep1 experts out
there who have an explanation for the discrepancy?

| (...) Yeah. The BD's with backpacks aren't aboard the Droid Control Ship, so they need transmitter packs to keep functioning. As stated elsewhere, the BD's from the Naboo Fighter are in the DCS Hangar (24 years ago, 14-Apr-00, to lugnet.starwars)

| (...) Thanks for the info, Dave. I hadn't realized there was a difference between the Battle Droids in the Naboo Swamp set and those in the Naboo Fighter set. I may have to pick up a Naboo Swamp set next time they go on sale. Up until now, I didn't (...) (24 years ago, 14-Apr-00, to lugnet.starwars)

| (...) Aye, the 1x2's are supposed to be backpacks. The Naboo Swamp set is supposed to be around the same period in the movie as when the Trade Federation Army assaulted Naboo (when fighting the Gungans.) Those Battle droids had backpacks, and since (...) (24 years ago, 14-Apr-00, to lugnet.starwars)
