I am hoping it will set a record, but I have my doubts.  it is a good movie,
and many people will see it multiple times, but what I have seen at the
theatres in my area makes me think it won't.
Titanic had a remarkable appeal.  Heck, my own mother saw the thing 6+ times -
and she never wanted to watch any movie more than once.  Even my nephew saw it
over a half-dozen times.  Once it got started, Titanic was doing record
business weekend after weekend for a stunningly long time.  Average people
seeing it over and over again.
And EP1, despite the hype and anticipation, didn't break the Jurassic Park
sequals opening weekend take.  Sure, it set a record for the week, but why
didn't the actual weekend take make the record?

It will be interesting to see what happens.  Might be close.

I am a bit worried that Episode I will not overtake Titanic.  When I saw it
yesterday, there were only 2 other people in the theater besides me.  I do not
think it broke the The Lost World record because people were anticipating huge
lines.  I remember when I saw Return of the Jedi as a kid, the line circled
around an entire mall!  I actually thought about holding off, as well, but I
could not resist.

Today, I am taking my mother to see Episode I, making it my third visit in a
week.

(...) Good point. The fear of huge lines may well have scared off many people. (...) So, I am assuming she isn't a SW fan? What was her reaction? Because that is what SW needs to break the record - non-SW people seeing the movie in droves. (...) (25 years ago, 28-May-99, to lugnet.starwars)
