I disagree with you.
Chapter I.
ANH was a marvelous epic. Sure, the plot was nothing innovative - basically a
new version of the classic hero/redemption plot - but it was good nonetheless.
It was even Art.
II. Empire came along, and it had a dark edge to it. Not many compromises for
the kiddies. Then...
III. The sad fall from grace. ROTJ was, frankly, IMO a sell-out. It was poorly
scripted with a redundant plot, had no hard edges, no great revelations, and the
teddy bear core whupped' **s on the Stormtroopers. Heck, even Vader just looked
like some benign old grandpa. In 1983, Lucas just cashed in on mass-market
commercialism to the nth degree. Sure, that hype there prior to TESB, but I
think that Lucas still held his artistic vision through 1980.
IV. 1999. Bitter tears. We all know that TPM was all beauty and no brains...eye
candy, but no substance. Lame and predictable, neither hot nor cold...it was,
to borrow a phrase from Alvin Plantiga, "a nauseating brew, fit for neither man
nor beast." IOW, it was all about crass commercialization...something goofy for
the kids, something for the soccer moms, and plenty of room for Jar Jar pez
dispensers.
In short, I disagree that Lucas is the grand mastermind who is subtely asking us
to look inward and comtemplate the evil side of heroism, or some such business.
ROTJ was disneyfied, and TPM was no better! I might buy your argument had this
event occured in a movie the caliber of TESB, but we had 16 years to contemplate
the staining of SW, and then were handed a half-done piece of nonsense. No,
Lucas catered to the least-common-denominator in his last two movies: mass-
market fluff. Bull in a China Shop, I say.
*Please note: I dislike, as you may note, both ROTJ and TPM, but I mean no
offense to those who may feel otherwise.
