As is obvious from our photos of the meeting, we skipped the baseplate all
togheter in the layout (for the most part). This worked for our needs but having
a plate is better. We didn't even bother connecting all the corridors with pins.
Mostly due to time constrains.
Let's remember one thing: A microscale standard has the main advantage that
people with smaller collections can join the fun. Thus, the standard should not
require a lot of elements in a given size, shape or color (and that includes
corridors in tr.green or whatever).
16 x 16 baseplates are hard to get, but cutting a 48 x 48 is simple and should
be affordable for most. This gives nine "microplates". So each plate cost about
$1 US.
Having to build a plate out of plates (heh) cost more and possible require a
bricklink order. Something not all want to do.
Not to mention using a 16 x 16 baseplate and then cover it in bricks. I don't
know about you guys but my collection contains 0 gray 6 x 12 plates and 14 2 x 4
bricks in gray (out of 370 according to Peeron).
I would need 32 2 x 4 bricks to make one module, that's twice my current
collection!
Sure, my collection is small by US-standards (55,721 parts according to peeron)
but with Swedish standards it's quite large. As Anders pointed out.
> Damn LEGO, start selling 16 x 16 baseplates in gray for a $1. :-)
They do, if you're willing to cut the 48 x 48 plates in nine pieces...
And those who don't want to cut their baseplates can build super modules ontop
of 32 x 32 plates or 48 x 48 plates.
Don't make a standard that small collectors can't use. It would take the point
out of the standard IMHO.
You could also have a "no baseplate needed" standard and cover the microarea
with 48 x 48 plates and install the modules on top of that. Not very practical
but doable.
