Well, there are five yellow wheels on each side, and the tread goes
round them.  The wheels are probably as large as the medium pulley and
one stud wide, with a narrow but deep groove in the center to keep the
treads on track.  The treads are just below three studs wide.  The
notches on the treads are rather small, and the friction between the
treads and a smooth surface isn't too large, so that a treaded vehicle
can turn easily, I guess.  The friction is still large enough for most
kinds of maneuvers you would perform.

In the supplied models that use the treads, the wheels are suspended by
four very large specialized pieces, one on each side of the wheels.
These are the large black frames you can see in

One can only be put off by that large specialized pieces, but these are
made to fit the treads snuggly, and hence they make the construction of
a treaded vehicle much easier.  Especially for kids, I guess.

In the models for which instruction are supplied, the mobile unit drives
the wheels/treads directly.  The treaded constructions has a lot of
friction inherented, so the motors must be extremely powerful to drive
them.  I notice that the motor part of the unit gets somewhat hot after
playing with it, so it probably spends batteries quite quickly.

(...) But you could use the treads without, yeah? I'd really like some better treads, as the ones that come in Mindstorms RIS, Tread Trekker, and Mountain Rambler are too small for a lot of things. (Particularly, hard to power and still have a lot (...) (26 years ago, 8-Oct-98, to lugnet.robotics)
