Additional observations:

- at the start of any program, the Scout emits barcode 004 which triggers a
'steam puff' sound in the Code Pilot (if it's in record mode). The Scout
seems to emit no other barcodes (but motor left, motor right, motor float
and puff) during the built-in programs.
- showing a valid barcode on a computer screen doesn't allow a Code Pilot to
read it, probably because of the interfering screen refresh rate (tried up
to 100 Hz).
- refresh rate may also interfere with a pulsating spot on the screen (to
simulate bar code) but I didn't test it
- running the Scout's light sensor over a backlighted bar code on regular
paper didn't give any response. Didn't have printable transparant sheet. So
far we don't know how to tell when the Scout recognizes a bar code anyway.
- the built-in programs distinguish between three light levels. If the
program is started at a medium ambient light  level, a strong light will
trigger the LED indicator and an 'up' sound while darkness will also(!)
trigger the LED indicator and a 'down' sound.

Even som more Additional observations: - I made up a program to blink a spot on a computer screen as if it where a barcdode, but didn't succeed in triggering either the Code Pilot or the Scout. Don't know if it's fundamental or just in execution. - (...) (25 years ago, 1-Nov-99, to lugnet.robotics)

(...) I don't have the Scout, but I have a funny feeling that the Micro Scout may also respond to these commands when it is in that "P" mode. Could somebody verify this? Thanks, Hao-yang Wang (25 years ago, 2-Nov-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Excuse the tabloid heading, but when I investigated undocumented behavior of the Scout last night, I hit onto some surprising features. See the preliminary report on LEGO on my mind.
