It does, however, get more complicated that than - see a recent thread on
lugnet.technic discussing this:

I would have flagged it up to you before, but the thread did not deal with the
issue of powering the axles, only steering. Essentially, once you have multi
axle steering, there are various ways in which it can be applied. The way you
are thinking of is known as "coordinated" mode, but there is also "crab mode"
in which all wheels point the same way allowing a large sideways component of
motion. Some vehicles also offer the ability to switch back to "less than all
the axles" steering, on either the front or rear axles. The only hint I've
found so far which indicates the usefulness of this is that front wheel only
steering may improve stability while driving at speed on roads.

The PDF documents on the mobile cranes section of the Liebherr web site are a
good source of information about this:

   http://www.liebherr.com/us/

I also have some witterings about it on my website:

   http://www.telepresence.strath.ac.uk/jen/lego/crane.htm

Throughout the years I have made several drive/steer axle mechanisms with
varying degrees of success, the most recent of which incorporated independent
suspension and *nearly* actually worked. One of these days I'll do something
proper with this and document it... the only trouble is the strain exploring
such mechanisms puts on your sanity.

(...) Heh! I've come to the conclusion that while it is interesting to tinker with suspensions, it is better to use the space in the models for other things. After all, the suspension one can make in a LEGO model is nowhere near realistic in it's (...) (24 years ago, 14-Dec-00, to lugnet.robotics)

(...) ... A number of cars have done this in the past, though not many were brought to the US. Amusingly enough, a little-known option on the 240SX (I forget which years) is the HICAS (HIgh CApacity Steering) system which is a 4WS option. The rear (...) (24 years ago, 14-Dec-00, to lugnet.robotics)

(...) If you are parallel and very close to an obstacle, like a curb or a wall, you can't get away from it with all-wheel steering. As soon as you turn the wheel to get the front away from the wall, the back of the vehicle will smash into it. This (...) (24 years ago, 14-Dec-00, to lugnet.robotics)
