If you're looking for a solution without Lego turntables look at this site
http://www.informatik.fh-hamburg.de/~lego
It has not the accuracy as a synchro with lego turntables but it does work.
BTW it has only about 100 degrees of freedom but you reach every point you
want to reach by driving for- and backwards.
This site is only available in german at the moment but i guess a look at
the photos might be interesting.
I thought about your vision command idea in a similar way : shaft encoding !
But there is a difficulty. The VC software only reacts of ONE field at a time.
You don't know which field the VC software evaluates. This means for your
multi-switch that if 1,2 and 3 are activated you may get the message 1 OR 2
OR 3 from the VC software.
