  Pain Made Tangible

Hi! Great googly moogly, it's the incredible disappearing ship! (URL) 31 pictures; go in sequence (they don't list that way, sorry). If I can figure out how to make a slideshow, I'll do that eventually. The "joy" sequence must await a good (...) (22 years ago, 8-Apr-02, to lugnet.build.military, lugnet.boats, lugnet.pirates)

  Re: French Squadron pics

(...) Those look very, very nice. Extremely, well, LEGO in execution-- in the sense that they use a lot of the "authentic" LEGO solutions to issues of geometry and so forth. I'll have to look at them more closely and make critiques later-- it's been (...) (22 years ago, 6-Apr-02, to lugnet.pirates)

  Re: French Squadron pics

(...) I used the RBR technique of 4x1 hinges and 4x8 wing plates to sweep the sides in, to approximate the curve of the hull section. It'll be interesting to see if/how the 2002 curve pieces might work with hulls. (...) Brown is a problem.... I (...) (22 years ago, 5-Apr-02, to lugnet.pirates)

  Re: French Squadron pics

(...) Mmmmm. Always a problem - Lego does not support well the kinds of broad and graceful curves and non cubist spaces favoured by the shipbuilders until rather recently. Modern ships one can do reasonably well snotwise, and there is enough grey (...) (22 years ago, 4-Apr-02, to lugnet.pirates, lugnet.loc.au)

  Re: French Squadron pics

In lugnet.pirates, Richard Parsons writes: [snip] (...) Thanks! Everything from the hull pieces up was built and rebuilt several times over. (Actually, the stern was the trickiest bit... it kept looking like someone had nailed a box on the back for (...) (22 years ago, 4-Apr-02, to lugnet.pirates, lugnet.loc.au)

  Re: Medieval Ships models

(...) Veeeery nice colour work on the castles fore and aft: (URL) better than my boring little hanseatic cogs. Mind you mine aren't the conveyance of the King, or Princessly Dudettes even. And have I mentioned what a stunner the site is Kevin. I (...) (22 years ago, 4-Apr-02, to lugnet.pirates)

In lugnet.pirates, Richie Dulin writes about some auspicious shipbuilding that's been going on in French Pacific posessions. (...) bowsprit. Hope that festivities between the Brikish and the French don't need to get too fire and thundery any time (...) (22 years ago, 4-Apr-02, to lugnet.pirates)

  Re: French Squadron pics

(...) The use of reverse slopes, then steep slopes is a direct steal from the larger Port Block ships. (...) The sloop is the smallest of the three. It's based on a Flybo hull (stretched by 4 studs). It'll be armed like the ketch, but without the (...) (23 years ago, 1-Apr-02, to lugnet.pirates)

  Re: French Squadron pics

Oh dear me! Quite good, indeed! I like uniforms you've cobbled up for your officers, and the ships are quite marvelous little craft. It's quite nify how you expanded the RBR hull to get your Brig to work. Is your sloop going to be larger or smaller? (...) (23 years ago, 1-Apr-02, to lugnet.pirates)

  French Squadron pics

Ahoy! A brief spell of sunshine has permitted some photos of two of my French ships. Neither has full rigging or sails (though the calico is at hand). The Eponine is a 12 gun brig: (URL) de Corvette Jacques Legeaux (left) stands at the starboard (...) (23 years ago, 31-Mar-02, to lugnet.pirates)

  Re: French Navy Ranks

(...) I just pulled my copy of 'Conway's The Line of Battle' off the shelf, realizing I should have looked earlier on this subject. Apparently, the French *invented* the mortar ship back in the mid 17-century. The book wasn't too specific on the (...) (23 years ago, 27-Mar-02, to lugnet.pirates)

  Re: French Navy Ranks

(...) Quite right. Napoleon never had a grasp of the Navy. I mean, embarking his Grand Armee into light vessels and trying to get out of port in the space of a few hours... those 'send the army on porpises' made more sense, for crying out loud! (...) (23 years ago, 27-Mar-02, to lugnet.pirates)

  Re: French Navy Ranks

(...) Later gunboats were also designed for river penetration and close-in assault and, frankly, terror operations against foes without similar capability. The earlier definition seems like the more piratical one, though. :D (...) Political (...) (23 years ago, 27-Mar-02, to lugnet.pirates)

  Re: French Navy Ranks

(...) Aha! Makes sense to me! I've come across a number of instances where gun brigs and cutters were listed as gunboats, but that definition clears things up neatly. (...) The very same! (...) Well, I have a feeling that after the Nile, the French (...) (23 years ago, 27-Mar-02, to lugnet.pirates)

  Re: French Navy Ranks

(...) An excellent series, and the basis for most of my ship knowledge of the era ;-) (...) I'm very pleased with the Brig (which owes a lot of the design inspiration to the larger ships out of Port Block), and have it displayed on top of the TV at (...)   Re: French Navy Ranks

It's not French but Steve Beisty's(Sp?) Cross-Section of A Man-of-War has an excellent break down of the crew. Try also watching some Horatio Hornblower movies, in some they had some references to the French navy. Hope your fleet comes out (...) (23 years ago, 27-Mar-02, to lugnet.pirates)

  Re: French Navy Ranks

(...) Most of the upper ranks are french words. Just some have E's etc removed when English-er-ing them. Most of the Deck Classes were named by function or part of the ship assigned to them. As were English and German(Elector era). Many of the (...) (23 years ago, 27-Mar-02, to lugnet.pirates)
