Good question, and one you should, in my view, ask first. Often the answer will
be some sort of extra payment to your club in addition to the appearance fee. At
least that has been the experience of some clubs.

Many clubs tend to expect that if they do a play area it increases their utility
to the organizer (translated into "whats in it for me", see above)

That said, I feel every club needs to decide for themselves what they are
comfortable with. But no one should be, in my view, surprised when clubs that
further LEGOs goals and desires more strongly end up getting more support from
LEGO than those that further LEGO goals less strongly. THAT said, people ought
to be doing club activities because they're fun for them, not because it's what
LEGO wants.

Also there are a few folks in the thread that might possibly be confusing Event
Kits and K8s a bit. They are as I understand it, different things.

My understanding of the Event Kit, if you got one, was that you were supposed to
use the parts that came with it in furtherance of club activities. That does not
necessarily mean play areas. It could well be structured building (tutoring kids
on HOW to build, something that some people enjoy doing(1)), or making special
things for displays (ornaments for your charity event, maybe?) or whatever, just
not merely enhancing your own collection. A number of clubs did use them for
play areas but that is by far not the only use.

K8s on the other hand, which were made available much earlier, were intended as
play area stock as I understand it, rather than for other projects.

deal of fun with that. Even more fun was that some of the models we facilitated
the kids building ended up on subsequent layouts and some of the ideas we gave
them ended up showing up in winning models at the model competition held the
next month... http://www.michlug.org/events/pastshows/2004-04-17.php

(...) Don't get all bent out of shape on this one Dave, I suspect it's not your communication (which is plenty friendly) but a bunch of overassuming selfish organizers.
