I work in the real world and I am usually at the leading edge where we are
trying to get the basic concepts down. So UML is overly precise for what I
typically need to convey. I am usually at the lines and boxes level and
showing a mishmash of logical and physical arch. UML doesn't work for that
(wasn't designed to).
I also find the syntax (what sort of lines and circles to draw) hard to
remember. I prefer 1, m, 0:1, etc notation as it's unambiguous
UML's biggest plus feature is that it's now becoming a standard in tools.
When you are at the OOD or late OOA stage it's great. Especially if the
modeling tool you are using supports it well. (which Rational Rose does)
But again, even when I am leading an analysis (rather than an enterprise
arch) the syntax trips me up. I tend to whiteboard stuff into existance and
play fast and loose with syntax. Let the designers refine that, I am at
50,000 feet with no time for worrying about the tiny details.
Funny, I had this same conversation with an architect at a rival firm on
Friday... he tended to agree.
