Thanks for that perspective, all good points! I agree that the term war has
been cheapened by such inane uses as WoD. (you and I both know that you and
I are both opposed to it, anyway, no matter what you call it).

I guess where I diverge is that I would indeed *like* this to be a real war
(and am bummed that the word has been denigrated, just as cusswords have
been, by misuse and overuse), because I see one as needful. If there really
*are* forces afoot that basically think freedom and liberty and capitalism
are a bad idea and that we're some sort of giant evil wart on the world
instead of the source of much that is good, and they are actually taking us
on, why then...

I want to smack them down.  Hard.

It sounds like you are falling for GWB's empty rhetoric. Lets assume ObL did
do this. Look at his motives (not his unjustifiable actions) and you will
see that he actually wants a little more freedom and liberty in places like
"Palestine" and Saudi-Arabia. Now, take a look at the way the USA has acted
in these places. Although I would not call it a "giant evil wart" it is not
pure good.

As for capitalism, I'm not sure what ObL thinks about that (but I understand
his brother owns a Hard Rock Cafe franchise in Beirut), but I certainly
don't want more people to die defending the worst excesses it.

In short, this enemy will never be defeated if we do not understand it
fully. Bush's empty rhetoric just plays right into their hands. Don't fall
for it!

I acknowledge that to do so will be difficult, and I do not have 100%
confidence in our leaders and their abilities to do so effectively, but I
think we need to try.

Not give up liberties to do so.
Not kill innocent civilians to do so.
Not ally with other terrorist states to do so.
Not continue our interventionist meddling to do so.

But we need to try.

For not to try is to have failed ourselves and what we are.
