I see the point you're making (and ultimately I agree with it) but I
consciously did not make a comparison to buying something from a retail
store. It isn't *quite* the same thing as walking into TRU and walking out
without paying. BUT, it is similar in spirit, imo.
I think the overwhelming majority of AFOL's understand and respect that if
someone agrees to buy something from someone else, BOTH parties are expected
to conduct the transaction in a timely manner. Timely may vary in the
opinions of some, but in my experience, having bought and sold to hundreds
of people over the years, timely doesn't imply "whenever I feel like getting
around to it." I'd say most of my buyers who pay with Paypal pay in under
48 hours. Most who pay with check or money order pay (as in I receive the
payment) within 5-7 business days.
Sure things come up - work, life, other stuff. And 99/100 times I wouldn't
have a problem with that. What I have a problem with is Rick's almost
cavalier attitude - which seems to be "I'll place an order at your shop, tie
up your inventory (such that you as a seller cannot make money off it even
if someone else who was prepared to pay that very second wanted it) and I'll
pay you when I get around to it, but it isn't important enough for you to
rush me or bother me or anything."
Wal-Mart offers a layaway plan for people who don't want to pay for their
stuff up front. I don't.

Most people do respect the orders they place. And I think most people
understand that if they place an order, they're expected (and they expect it
of themselves) to pay for it promptly. Brickbay allows for starting the
non-paying buyer process at 7 days after the order. After that a seller can
cancel the order 14 days after the process has been started.
Now I do want to stress that I'm not saying Rick doesn't pay - I know for a
fact he does. He falls into the "slower than normal" category in my
experience, but he does keep his end of the bargain. My problem is with his
attitude about it, which seems to imply that everything need to work out for
his convenience and timetable.

| To All, Well, this has brought an interesting discussion, and I thought I might voice in a little, since I do a little commerce with the fine folks on LUGNET from both the US and around the world. It was a hard decision to allow other payments other (...) (24 years ago, 25-Jan-01, to lugnet.market.buy-sell-trade)
