I have now built all the Harry Potter sets that relate to Hogwarts Castle
(specifically the castle itself (3 parts), Snape's Dungeon/Classroom,
Forbidden Corridor, Winged Keys, and Final Challenge).
It seems like a few people in the design team had the good idea of designing
the sets so they could join together, but all implemented it separately. That
is to say that some of the sets appear to be designed to link up with other
sets, but different techniques were used on different sets so it's not that
easy to link them up at all. I spent the weekend fiddling about, trying to
come up with an integrated set of structures.
Snape's Dungeon was clearly built to have something on top of the larger half,
by virtue of the fact that it has no roof itself but does have the supports
needed to take the large 16x8 (or whatever size they are) brick base of
another set. Some parts of some sets are joined very loosely using just a few
studs with a lot of tiles (like the Flying Ninja Fortress), suggesting these
are intended to be plug-n-played. Some of the sets are hinged but curiously
they are not all hinged in the same direction, meaning you can't stack them on
top on one another and still bend them through the hinges. Other sets (such as
the dining hall of the castle) appear to designed to make it impossible to
link them at the sides to other parts of the castle; your only option appears
to put them on top of other pieces.
The spiral staircases get in the way of a connection with another set, so you
pretty much have to put the Griffindor tower at the left end of your
integrated castle and the Forbidden Corridor on your right. The mechanism for
the leaf trap gets in the way of a connection at that level too on this set.
I think I need to rebuild some of the structures from the ground up into
mirror-reverse to make them fit together better (in terms of the hinges). I
also think I have a better design for Hagrid's Hut's roof, but have yet to
execute it (may require more large black wing plates than I have).
If you are thinking of buying these HP sets, my preferred ones so far are:
Hogwarts Castle itself, Hagrids Hut, Snape's Dungeon/Classroom
in terms of their design, pieces, and satisfaction with the final result.
I was less inspired by the Winged Keys, Forbidden Corridor, and Final
Challenge.

| (...) Yes, the spiral staircases (Forbidden Corridor and Hogwarts Castle) are pests. It's all very nice that you can spiral them in either direction, but the price you pay is that slightest vibration tends to close up your staircase. I would have (...) (23 years ago, 5-Nov-01, to lugnet.loc.au)
