Thankyou to James and Kerry for the comparisons.

I assume that the decision is weighed heavily by the fact you already have
one stashed away bought for around half the price of Hogwarts.

Well, my preference was obviously for my son to want the KK for the above
reasons, but the decision was down to him, I admit I'm a softy when it comes
to Christmas, if he'd really preferred the HP then I would have sworn
quietly to myself and gone ahead and bought it :)

What I did do was (unbiasedly as possible), sit down and help him compare
the two - both action and component wise.  He was very aware that HP was the
"new castle" and essentially replaces the KK one (he has no idea who Harry
Potter is, it's the castle-ishness of it that got his interest), and in his
mind the HP one would do the exciting things that the KK castle does.  (I
did already have another KK castle, so he saw it built and played with it
when I initially bought it, but it's been in my parts collection since then,
mean mummy).

The exciting points of the KK castle for a 6 year old boy are the actions:
the plunger type cannon (now I'm going to try and shoot down that turret up
the back Mum!), the wall that flips the treasure out, the spinning turret
with the catapult, the spinning stained glass window, the throne with a
hidden compartment and IIRC there was an axe trap at the back and (I may be
confused with some other set here) a trapdoor?.  He also loved the
drawbridge, the hollows in the baseplate and even the horse.

Looking at the box of Hogwart's, all we could see was the spinning
window/wall and some sort of
pull-on-the-chain-and-open-this-box-arrangement. It's interesting, as Kerry
pointed out, that Hogwart's does do things, but they are not at all obvious
from looking at the box (and we must have spent a good 20 minutes
scrutinising it on the floor at Myer!)

After reading the two reviews, I can see that Hogwart's is probably the
better set for parts, and as an AFOL that (along with price) is what I'd
base my preference on, there's a fair bet I'll buy one at 20% off at some
stage.  Personally I was very disappointed with the KK castle, and the fact
that I had to pay full price for mine!

6 year old boys are more interested in the overall box model than the
component pieces, and the action aspects - so KK was a clear winner for him,
(and the $100 price tag was a winner for Mum!)
