Meanwhile in Europe...
1) Distribution to independant stores.
In the Netherlands most toy stores belong to a few chains. One of the few
left independant store owners alwys complains when I talk to him, about how
LEGO can't deliver in time, in quantities asked for. (E.g. I ordered a
Technic Darth Vader through him which should be released last January. It
finally arrived two weeks ago, while some chain stores had it for months).
This is loosing him business.
He said LEGO recently acknowledged the production and distribution problem
and had announced these problems will probably continue for a while. The
weird thing is, that we presumed this all was because of TLC's current focus
on the US. It's surprising to see the exact same problems over there!
2) Price margins and independant stores.
Of the few independant toy stores left, I have known 3, and all three of
them were able to offer LEGO at a slightly lower price point than the big
chain stores. This shows how (in the Netherlands) the big store chains,
drive up the price, regardless of volume advantages and regardless TLC's
interest. Actually, last year TLC published suggested retail prices in their
catalog, which were under actual store prices. Hence the big chains refused
to distribute that catalog through their stores. This year the prices are
left out again...
