I do count it as a privilege to be included in LEGO's internal affairs.  This
weekend meetings and social time was an incredible gift from LEGO to each one
of
us.

A gift?  Please.

No really.  We all considered it a privilege to be invited.

LEGO got just as much, if not more, out of having you lot up there.  Otherwise,
they wouldn't have bothered.

Sure, LD has something to gain-- otherwise, as you say, they wouldn't have invited
us.  But a lot of the conversation was about how TLC can help out LTCs and what
they are doing.  We are talking about a 2 way street.

But the overall point is that LEGO Direct is about establishing relationships with
its consumers, and that is precisely what I see them doing.  And the good will
which has been established can be continue through avenues such as this NG.

I haven't been nosey enough to ask about travel and boarding expenses.  It
would be a bit shocking to me to find out that LEGO picked up the tab, however.

Be shocked.

In any event, this was not a "gift".  They traded whatever they gave you for
what you gave them- which is invaluable information for figuring out where
their business is going to go.

hehe, as if *we* have all the answers (Lar notwithstanding;-)  The direction of
many things we talked about isn't set in stone, but a process.  We provided input
into where we think (and want) the direction to go.  Where possible, I think LD
will follow our advice, because it is what we as consumers want.

And even if I said, "You should offer X element in bulk, because I know a lot of
people would buy it", and they do and they make a mint off of that advice, who
really benefits?  Win-win.

Frankly, even if they did pay your room and board, in my mind you would have
done well to ask for a consultant's fee as well, and made *them* sign NDAs
about the direction that the LDraw community is going to go in.

This isn't about money, it's about our love for the brick.  I know people get paid
for the kinds of info we were giving, but we gave freely in the attitude of
cooperation.  And I will continue to give, because I happen to believe that the
world would be a better place if more kids played with LEGO instead of watching TV
or playing with video games.  And if my input can in some way contribute to that
by making LEGO more appealing to today's kids, then I'm happy:-)

Call me naive or whatever, but I'm about sparking kids' imaginations-- your kids,
through my club's (GMLTC) train layout, or my own 2 kids through our 300,000+
brick collection.  LEGO is the best way to do it (and reading:-)

(...) A priviledge, yes. A gift? No. LEGO got just as much, if not more, out of the meeting than you did. It's important to remember that LEGO is a company. LEGO is not your friend, it's not your enemy, it's not Santa's workshop. They don't do (...) (24 years ago, 12-Feb-01, to lugnet.lego.direct)
