Use of LEGO on album cover... legal or no? —Brendan Powell Smith
Hi there. I'm in a band named The Human Heads. For our recently completed album, we would like to use a photo I took of a LEGO creation I made. You can see the album cover itself and other photos of the structure on my Brickshelf account: (URL) (...) (23 years ago, 25-Feb-01, to lugnet.general)

Re: Use of LEGO on album cover... legal or no? —Richard Marchetti
(...) sure. Why not just contact TLC and ask for permission? Or you could always read Lego's Fair Play documant at: (URL) then just decide for yourself. What is SO wrong with the cd cover design is that Timmy is practically dead center of the design (...) (23 years ago, 25-Feb-01, to lugnet.general)

Re: Use of LEGO on album cover... legal or no? —Mark D. McKean
(...) The analogy is invalid. A company making bricks will not have any copyright on the design of those bricks (there may be patents, but patents don't preclude reproducing images of patented items). TLC does hold copyrights on the designs printed (...) (23 years ago, 25-Feb-01, to lugnet.general)

Hi, everybody. Just wanted to fill you guys in on what has happened since I first posted. A fellow LUGNETer sent me the e-mail address of someone at LEGO who deals with these sorts of things, and with whom he had dealt successfully in the past. I (...)      (...) It sounds like typical LEGO policy. Sorry to hear it happened. I've been there. Hey, how about all those great T-shirts we can get from LEGO Direct... oh wait, never mind. :^P ~Grand Admiral Muffin Head (23 years ago, 12-Mar-01, to lugnet.general)

Ok, Rev. here's what I've got to say..First of all I like the stuff you have posted on brickshelf.    (...) What on Earth are you talking about? That's like saying, "I don't know why Big Lumber Company didn't sue when John Carpenter made a desk out of their wood and sold it on eBay." The album cover makes much more sense. It's pretty clear that they (...) (23 years ago, 14-Mar-01, to lugnet.general)

(...) Hmmm. Yeah, "The Thing" is one of my favourites, ever since I first saw it (in about '84). And the DVD is good value, too - has some really good commentary about how they did some of the effects. Pretty fun stuff! ROSCO (23 years ago, 14-Mar-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

(...) If by "best" you mean comically protracted, I wholeheartedly agree!
