I read in the WSJ a couple of weeks ago that the big toy stores like Toys R Us
and WalMart etc also had a bad season, people are getting really bored with
all the junk they sell, whereas the smaller speciatlity toy shops improved
sales. Items like Rokenbok sold very well (according to WSJ).
Like I said in an earlier post. Lego is spreading itself too thin and
producing too much mediocre stuff, a sure way to lose money.
I think Lego is doing itself a disservice by aiming at the TRU/WalMart crowd.
I mean why are there so many "Not Available in any Store" sets now in the S@H
catalog? Why can't the speciality toy shops get these as well? I can
understand if the superstores don't want to stock them but it's ridiculous to
hold them back from everyone else.
I hope Lego is humbled by this experience and returns to its roots, i.e.
making the best construction toys money can buy.

TLG itself is not in great danger, but it has lost a lot of customers to electronic toys and computergames. IMHO: (...) (26 years ago, 19-Jan-99, to lugnet.general)
