One confusing aspect might be the events name. Why BrickWorld? Why
not something more regional, like the organizers of NWBrickCon chose? Not
only doesnt it sound like it wants to be regional, it sounds like it wants
to be international!

John & the whole community,
We want to apologize on behalf of ourselves and the Brickworld Team. If
anything we have done to create a great public event in Chicago has offended
you, we are truly and sincerely sorry.

I dont accept your apologize, Bryan, because I believe that you have nothing
for which you should be apologizing. And I just want to be clear: it wasnt
my intention to express negativity at all. My only desire is help make BW a
more successful event.

You asked where the name Brickworld came from...honestly, I dont remember
who came up with it...but it came out of a brainstorming session amongt the
team. Why did we choose it? For exactly the reason John states - because it
sounded big and international - because it caused a vision of a really grand
event that the whole world would someday want to be a part of. Plus, it just
sounded really cool!!!

Well, I think the name connotates that just great:-) I think what some people
are reacting to, as I mentioned previously, is the timing of the event in
Summer. I know that you guys spaced it as far apart from the BrickFest timeslot
as you could, but look at the big picture for a moment.
When BrickFest began, it was scheduled in August. After its success, some
thought that it would be cool to have a west coast event, and so BricksWest
was organized and held on the left coast and in Feb, which is almost perfectly
distanced from BrickFests time. And that was a good time slot, too. Then the
organizers of NWBrickCon were looking for a time to hold their fest. They
ended up choosing the Fall. What Im trying to say is that if it is your
intention and hope of creating a major fest, youre going to need to examine
closely the timing of it, so it doesnt hurt attendance for other events and
yours BOTH.
I know summer is a great time, especially for us midwesterners for whom it is
all too short, but maybe thats not the best season for BrickWorld. I
honestly dont think that there would be any objection if BrickWorld had chosen
the old BricksWest time slot and sold it as a Winterfest, a la the St. Paul
Winter Carnival. Come to Chicago where we do winter right! You get the idea.
The point is that if you want to became a BIG player, youve got to be aware of
the other players around you. Of course, all of this is moot at this point
because the DC BrickFest isnt happening, but if it fires up again next summer,
this is bound to be an issue again.
You mustnt try and have your cake and eat it, too. If BrickWorld aspires to be
a great regional event like NWBrickCon, then I dont think anyone would have a
problem with holding it in June. But if you want BrickWorld to become a
Brickfest-type event and embraced by the AFOL community at large, you should
seriously take into consideration the annual AFOL fest calendar, and plan
accordingly. Okay, Ive made that point 3 times now, so Ill quit.
See you in June in the windy city,
JOHN

| John, I have to respectfully disagree with you on one point... holding the Brickworld fest in winter. I live in Michigan, which like all the midwest states can have a great "El Nino" winter like this one, where it has rarely snowed or even gone (...)
