Hi, Baz.
I was pretty upset when they launched the color change. It was the catalyst
that pushed me away from the hobby for the last year or two. I still don't like
the look of the new colors, and I hate the confusion of trying to keep the new
colors separate from the old ones.
But what can you do? The new colors are here to stay, so we might as well try
to embrace them. I am participating heavily in the hobby again, even if my
buying habits have not returned to their pre-bley levels. I have bought a few
new sets that contain a lot of the new colors. I am also collecting the brand
new colors - dark red, lime, butter, and the many new shades of blue. I know
eventually I'll have enough of these new colors to incorporate them into my
collection properly.
For now, the new colors generally gather in tubs, usually still in the poly
bags. I don't use them when building, except for occasional utility parts (like
2x2 bley tiles from PaB) that get used in prototypes. Once a new color reaches
critical mass (meaning that I have multiple copies of all basic parts) I can
begin to consider using it in new construction. So far, this has only happened
with a few small models.
At some point, I will have to make space in my sorting drawers to accomodate the
new colors. I currently have one set of bin drawers for every major color, and
one additional set of drawers for the "rare" colors - old brown, orange, teal,
purple, and sand red/green.
As far as confusion with BrickLink sellers goes, you might consider e-mailing
the seller before buying to verify the color before you place your order. Or
just do what the rest of us are doing - start collecting the new colors and
eventually you'll have enough of them to do something interesting with. You
might not be crazy about the colors, but it's still genuine LEGO. Just as with
any new part, I figure sooner or later I'll find a good use for just about
anything this company sells.
