I was looking through the old Castle World site when I came across the
"magic" section.  I was wondering if anyone would be interested in having a
"magic" section on the temp site.  I have some great ideas for spells to put
up on the site.  A character (sig-fig or otherwise) could be showing the
technique for executing the spell in a few pictures.  The spells could be
realm-specific so that they don't break the rules of anyone's realm.  I
think this would be a great way to show off our creative methods for
portraying magic/majick with Legos.

Anyone have any comments or suggestions?

Hmm... not to be the sour banana, but I dunno if I'd include a magic section if
it's gonna be for spells etc... I guess my problem with that is that it starts
to make it as if CW is more of a gaming environment rather than a MOC showcase
extravaganza.

However, there is something to be said for CW to have a gaming side to it...
Certainly nothing forced onto participants of CW, but open for all members if
they so chose to partake. I think a lot of people would be interested in
interacting in that sense. It's just heretofore it's all been mutual
collaborations to a single end (I.E. ballads & storylines) rather than a real
'game'.

So, maybe I'll change my answer to 'someday that'd be neat' rather than 'nah,
don't bother'. Of course, if it's for Lego 'magic' creations, perhaps I'm open
to including it... however, I think at present any magic creations can fit into
the existing categories... And just to give a clearer description of those,
currently, I'm counting on:

- Structures (castles, inns, houses, forts, etc)
- Places (forests, deserts, mountains, caves, etc)
- Maps (overall maps of places)
- Characters (specific creatures-- Bob the Dragon, Jill the Maiden, etc)
- Creatures (generic creatures-- dragons, ents, ogres, centaurs)
- Vehicles (airships, wagons, boats, carriages)
- Ballads (story of Bob & Jill who go to a castle in the desert and meet ogres)

Hmm... perhaps I should add a 'weapons' category for maces, catapults,
ballistas, staves, etc. If anyone can think of a MOC that would fit into a
'magic' category but not these categories, maybe that's what Magic could be
for... otherwise I'd probably hold off until CW actually develops a gaming
side...

Anyway, in other news, I expect an automated CW to be up rather 'soon'-- before
now all the code for CW I had been doing was on a Linux box at our apartment,
which simply CAN'T have (affordable) dedicated internet access. But thanks to
circumstances, the Linux box currently hosting all my personal web pages is
going to be upgraded and replaced with the Linux box that's been sitting in our
apartment, which is going to be great orders of magnitude faster (from a 66Mhz
486 to an AMD K6II 500Mhz, and about 3 times the memory) Hence, we may see a
public user-updatable CW by January... so stay tuned!

(...) I think a weapons section would be great. Perhaps instead of a "magic" section, we can title it "special effects" since I think that is what Wilson was really trying to have a place for. Of course narative detail is always nice on anything (...) (24 years ago, 15-Nov-00, to lugnet.castle.org.cw)
