The fun with that would be that a mountain with these or source of them
would be highly desirable and hard to find.  If you want to go further, • the
chrome armor on the knights might be carved from these crystals - giving
them the power to levitate and fly.  "Death from above!"  The idea of
opening up the airs through a controlled means (via crystals) adds a fun
demension to the whole world.

Your crystal idea sounds alot like the way that mecha and airships work in
the world of the Japanese anime Escaflowne.  In it, dragon hearts (or
something like that, I've only watched one episode), which are what allow
dragons to fly, can be harvested and used to propel mecha and airships.  A
mine, called the Dragon Graveyard, was being harvested for all the • crystals
of the dead dragons buried there.  My details are extremely flaky, but the
general idea is there.

I've seen the whole Escaflowne series, and it does a great job of mixing
air-vehicles with medieval battle.  In Escaflowne, there are two kinds of
flight.

The flying mechas get their energy from dragon hearts (a magical crystal
each dragon has inside itself).  These can be found either by killing a
dragon, or from mining a dragon burial ground.

Other ships (notably the Zaibach flying fortress) mine a special "floating
rock", which is found in obscure corners of the land.  These rocks are
attached to the ships to make them fly.
