That is a true point, castle stone is not something anybody in antiquity
imported very much of.  The labor and time needed to build from foreign stone
would have made a military fortification moot.  Often if it was a border
dispute, they'd just use wood to save time and cash on hand.  After the area was
more stabilized, then they could move the stone from local quarries.  By local,
that means native stone, cut by peasants or labor of some kind.  The only
oddities to this formula would be personal palaces, temples, tombs or sites of
significance for another reason (i.e. Stonehenge).  England never had, if memory
serves, much in the way of granite, but tons of sandstone.

If I were to build a regional/realistic castle of the fortification style , then
I would choose the sand-(color) LEGO elements.  Gray would be reserved for
palaces, great halls, the lord's keep, structurally vulnerable points or
majestic temples.

While I like the fantasy element in the new line, I think the colors and style
are a bit dull.  I would rather see a re-hash of the Black Knights Castle
http://guide.lugnet.com/set/6086 in Sand Red/Green/Blue and Tan colors as well
as a supporting assortment of re-hashes of the old segments of the Medieval
Marketplace sets from the 80's.  The magic in LEGO is recreating life in small
scale.  I can always stage a military takeover of those with more interest from
the kids than the Knights Who Wear Power Ranger Suits.  There is nobody to
rescue from the bad guys in the KK line.

I am not trying to bash the new stuff, just listing my "rather" wishes on it.  I
could quite happily never buy any of it for this reason, as I can make my own
and be happier.
