Sandstone was more of a construction material in the Middle East than Europe.
However, most weathered stone is a lot "warmer" (yellow, orange, red) than
standard issue Old Gray (and New Gray is actually shifted to the cool end of the
spectrum).

I have a friend who makes sand castles...wait...

Haha! I didn't know that existed! Boy, you can find anything on the web!
Anyway, yes, I agree, I'd like to see a tan or sand-red castle.

Plaster or paint, usually. I've seen pictures of one with a fairly light
natural stone that was close to white - but judging by photos can be deceptive
depending on the light. White stone worth building a castle out of has to be
pretty darn rare. It was common to white-wash castles during the middle ages,
in any case.

I'm not judging by the particular release alone, but by the slide in this
direction in general over several releases. I don't think they'll will suddenly
do an about face and go back to the Crusader/Black Knights/Black Falcons style
that was the pinnacle of Lego Castles. But I'd rather have some Castles than
none.

I don't care for the designs they have on the shield, but I think they can be
drafted as Roman shields, or crossbowman's pavise.
