Also, making a camera.dat shorcut would be good too.  I've got a shortcut file
that I use with a perl script to the same effect, but it very cumbersome.

How would you want it to work ?
Just to specify the location of the camera ?

After reading your post, I use the 2nd approach (the view pyramid) to  specify
the location and orientation of the camera.  Here's the file I use (the
cylinder is just a placeholder):
