I'm not sure you're right there. I think Steve may have been trying
to achieve a specific dithered look, different from the effect created
by the pre-defined metal code in say ldview or ldglite, probably to
better differentiate some static images of metal parts from static
images of ordinary parts. I know the code in ldglite really only makes
the metalic nature of the parts obvious when you spin them to see the
highlights move.
If he's actually using the dithering to cheat and create an effect
that does not reflect real life, I think we need to consider what it
means to define a fake material. Who knows what sort of fake
materials someone might want to display?
