I agree with your ordering, and tapered is a better descriptor than
rounded.

Where I differ is in the use of 4.5 V, 12 V and 9 V in the naming. While
I don't think gen 1, 2 or 3 are good, these aren't either. We've had the
debate about naming parts based on first usage before and I'm in the
camp that is against it.

The 4.5v rail is used for a number of things other than 4.5v track. Now,
it's true that most of those things are railish in nature (tracks for
overhead cranes, gun carriages and the like) so calling it track seems
OK (1) but calling it 4.5v seems wrong to me. This is an old debate and
if we can't come up with a better name, so be it. But I feel it's worth
a try.

1 - calling it RAIL would be better. Track consists of rail, sleepers
(or ties in US parlance) and a bunch of smaller parts like spikes and
tie plates that we don't simulate with LEGO, we just put the rail right
on the sleeper.. so I'd argue for rail, sleeper and track used in the
appropriate places. Put rail/sleeper etc. AFTER track if you want it to
sort right.

Hmmm, hmmm, that might actually work, but I think it's just a tiny bit more
complicated as you think. Please keep in mind that there are track parts
implicitly intended for either the  4.5 V or the 12 V system only. Such non
interchangeable parts really can't do without their voltage designations.
And the new metal track is commonly known as 9 V track, so for them I would
like to keep the Volt designation in place next to the descriptor "Metal".

Okay, how's this for a compromise:

Old "blue" track:

Train Track Tapered  4.5 V Crossing
Train Track Tapered  4.5 V Points Left
Train Track Tapered  4.5 V Points Right
Train Track Tapered 12 V Crossing
Train Track Tapered 12 V Points Left
Train Track Tapered 12 V Points Right
Train Track Tapered Rail Curved Inside
Train Track Tapered Rail Curved Outside
Train Track Tapered Rail Straight

(And indeed, the sleepers/ties where regular  Plates  2 x  8)

Newer "grey" track:

Train Track Slotted  4.5V Crossing
Train Track Slotted  4.5V Points Left
Train Track Slotted  4.5V Points Right
Train Track Slotted 12V Crossing
Train Track Slotted 12V Points Left
Train Track Slotted 12V Points Right
Train Track Slotted Rail Curved Inside
Train Track Slotted Rail Curved Outside
Train Track Slotted Rail Straight

Specific 12 V parts that (I believe) are indifferent to being "Slotted"
or "Tapered":

Train Track 12 V Decoupler Base
Train Track 12 V Power Insert Curved
Train Track 12 V Power Insert Decoupler
Train Track 12 V Power Insert Signal
Train Track 12 V Power Insert Straight
Train Track 12 V Signal Base

Also in this group: the movable parts belonging to the points and the
decoupler.

Current track:

Train Track  9 V Metal Crossing
Train Track  9 V Metal Curved
Train Track  9 V Metal Straight
Train Track  9 V Metal Points Left
Train Track  9 V Metal Points Right

Also in this group: the movable parts belonging to the 9 V points.

Phew...:-)

Greetings, Manfred Moolhuysen.

Yes! Excellent compromise! It's got the key stuff up front and the fact that not all parts are 4.5v specific or 9v specific comes out clearly. Adviesbureau Noord/Zuidlijn wrote: <very nice work, all of which I snipped> (...) I'll say! :-) Now say (...) (25 years ago, 13-Oct-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)
