Manfred:

The issue is about the parts from the group "Train Track  4.5V".

Why is it labeled "4.5V"? It works quite fine for 12V trains
too (just to make sure we get a long discussion :-).

I believe two different types are known here:

1- the oldest "Blue" type of track, that was mounted on regular
   2 x  8 Plates
2- the newer "Grey" type of track, that had to be mounted on
   specially notched sleepers (or ties)

Yes.

We might want to remember the 12V power tracks too.

Because I believed that the colours where the best commonly known attributes
for the two types of 4.5V track, my original proposal was to use the
designations "Blue" and "Grey" as distinctive descriptors in the name.

Actually I distinguish between "unpowered", "12V", and "9V",
but that is simply because I only have 12V power tracks for
the second-generation track system.

Some of you object principally against the use of colours as descriptors in
the name, and in a way I think those people are right.

Good.

I might be persuaded to designate the newer "Grey" type with de
descriptor "Slotted" as part of the name, but I would really dislike using
something ugly like "Unslotted", "Non Slotted" or "Without Slots" for the
other type.

Very understandable.

My proposal is to use the descriptor "Tapered" for the oldest "Blue" type of
track, based on the fact that both end of the parts are tapered, downward at
the "half way up"-level and "negative/upwards" at the bottom. This tapering
allowed rather sudden changes in inclination from one segment to another.

Not a bad idea. What about "1st gen.", "2nd gen.", and "3rd
gen."?

[...]
Train Track  4.5V Tapered Points Right • [...]
Train Track  4.5V Slotted Points Left
[...]

I think I would be able to remember those names.

Play well,

Jacob

(...) My 12V trains don't move when I put them on the 4.5V-only track :) Now seriously, maybe we could drop the "4.5" from the name and replace it with "old" but I don't think it's going to be a good idea. Of course we'd have to keep the current (...) (25 years ago, 8-Oct-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

(...) I fear I am about to be inconsistent with something I said before... but maybe what we are trying to distinguish with 4.5v and 9v is confusing us. 1st, 2nd, 3rd gen would work... if we can't come up with something better. But what if we use (...) (25 years ago, 8-Oct-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)
