Ultra-cool!  I'm jealous of the flythrough.

I'm glad you like it.  I thought you had fly-through basically implemented
in your test version, though.  I'm still undecided on the mouse tracking.  I
think the way I did it works fine, but it's not at all what people from FPS
games are used to.  On the other hand, this way was easier to implement :-).
I also want to tweak it to work better at varying frame rates.  It currently
moves and spins a whole lot faster when the frame rate is high than when the
frame rate is low, due to the fact that I don't adjust for that.  In fact,
trying to use fly-through mode with a small part when V-Sync is turned off
is pretty much a lost cause.

Here's a few quick notes.  On Windows it seemed to look for the
help.html file in the root directory on C: and couldn't find it
in the same directory as the executable.

That's really odd.  It's supposed to look in the application directory
(based on argv[0]) for the help file.  It works on my computers (work
computer is Windows 2000, home computer is Windows 98).  What version of
Windows are you using?

Put the current Flythrough/Examine mode on the status bar ala Emacs.

Great idea.  I knew there had to be useful information that could be put in
the status bar, but couldn't think of anything off-hand other than FPS.

Have you ever considered two sets of display preferences?  One
set for beauty and one set for for speed, and a quick key combo
to toggle between the two.  And while I'm at it, mention which
of the two display preferences you're using on the status bar
ala an Emacs minor mode.

I hadn't thought of that, but that's also a great idea.  I might just go
with savable display settings instead, and let the user call them whatever
they want.  Then they could create however many they want, call them
whatever they want, and switch between them freely (with perhaps keyboard
accelerator support for the first few).  This would be extremely useful once
I get command line snapshots to work fully, because they could then specify
which set of settings they want to use on the command line, and have a
custom set just for snapshots.

I didn't have much time to play, but is there a way to put the model
back on screen if you loose it in flythru?  Maybe you need a tiny
wraparound radar screen in the status bar to locate the original
lookat point.  Or perhaps just a compass.  Eek!  I'm rambling...

Ctrl+R (View->Reset View) works in both fly-through and examine mode, and
puts the view back at its initial location.  A radar in the status bar could
be fun, too.  I might be able to just use an eye to indicate examine mode
and a live radar to indicate fly-through mode.

I'm not sure that the status bar is big enough for a usable radar, though.
The area is only 16 pixels tall, which works out to 14 once you include a 1
pixel margin above and below.  And since a radar really needs to have a
center pixel, it has to be an odd number of pixels big, which makes it 13
pixels.  Two 13-pixel circles (one for the front hemisphere, the other for
the back) might be just enough, though.

That's it for now.  Gotta do some work.

Thanks for the input.

(...) Windows 2000. But I ran it from a DOS window. CD to the ldview.197 directory and run ldview something.ldr. This might give a different argv[0] than clicking in the Explorer. Don (22 years ago, 10-Sep-02, to lugnet.cad)
