Have you read the Hyperion series of books by Dan Simmons? There are elements of your story in the series (ie the Church being a powerful force in the galaxy, the nature of man). The laser in question is known as ABL or AirBorne Laser. Its built by a team consisting of Boeing, Lockheed and TRW. At my local Wal*Mart they have photo disks, photo CD's and online storage. I looked ino this one day and you get low resoulution images for 3$ on a disk, high resoulution images on a CD for 7$!!!! I scrounged grey parts from every set I have then threw in a handful of grey brick packs (5145) and some large grey baseplates acquired at discounts.
