Hi all,

I'm a daily reader of .castle and one of those who has posted LotR creations
(and in actuality there are only two of us who have posted multiple LotR
creations).  I would strongly argue against creating a new group for
fantasy.  My reasons:

1.  High traffic.  ?  What high traffic?  I just checked "Traffic" and there
were 21 posts today in .castle, but that is a high day.  There were 85 over
the last week, which means the rest of the week there were more like 10.
I'm relatively new to Lugnet (6 months), but have been reading various
usenet groups for years, many of which carry 100+ posts a day.  You learn to
skim subject lines.

2.  The Lego Group has already spoken on this.  System castle sets include
dragons, witches, wizards, skeletons, and castles that have no relation to
history.  If we created a .fantasy group, would any creations using Fright
Knights pieces belong there or in .castle?

3.  More groups = more duplication.  If I build Minas Tirith (which I intend
to at some point), does that belong in .fantasy or .castle?  It would end up
getting cross-posted to both.

4.  No need.  I've heard no outcry in .castle, where these things most
closely belong.  The complaint comes out of build.ancient, in regards to one
thread.  Pern is, admittedly, problematic.  It is really sci fi but it has
all the trappings of fantasy.  I think .castle can handle a few posts about
whether or not LEGO should produce bronze dragons.

And, most importantly,

5.  Greater compartmentalization leads to more noise than signal.  I've seen
this again and again on Usenet.  Once you start breaking up into too many
sub-groups, you get more complaining about incorrect placement of posts than
you do real posts.  This tends to lead to arguing, hurt feelings, and a
general state of unwelcome towards anyone new who dares to think their
castle should be discussed in .castle, but is shouldn't because a wizard
lives there.

You point out someting which I was somewhat ignoring, that someone posting the material is asking for a new group, however, a quick search for Pern on Lugnet finds 22 posts, 7 of which are in the thread which Kevin started, 8 of which (at the (...)
