That would be a huge step in the wrong direction, IMHO, and totally against
the spirit of Lugnet.
What I (and others, I believe) want is for someone on the admin team to put
time into the news groups. At one point early on, when there was more
enthusiasm, and Lugnet was a new exciting thing, Todd typically performed
this role. If someone posted a question to admin.*, it tended to get an
answer. A debate in .admin about some obscure TOS point would have Todd
participate. The TOS were updated if necessary. If someone posted an
auction announcement in the wrong place, the error was gently pointed out.
Posts that were horribly off-topic or overly harsh-languaged were given a
similar gentle note; not every time, but often enough to curb excessive TOS
violations, and keep things mostly civil and compartmentalized.
I am concerned that with *nothing* of this sort happening, Lugnet is slowly
sliding into "anything goes" territory. Not all that long ago, there was a
post that was basically 90% foul language, and it gendered zero notice from
authority, even though it was brought to administrative attention.
Actually, that's not entirely fair; the post is canceled now, which may well
mean admin noticed it and it was dealt with off-line. But regardless, it
*looks* like nothing was done, which gives the impression that no one with
authority is enforcing the rules.
thanks,
James
