Not only do most people object to allowing this - but the only people I've
seen who are for it are potential *sellers*, not buyers.

Furthermore, this goes against what Todd said:
"It was never the intention for the welcoming to occur by any
means other than newsgroup charters.  (In other words, the participants in
a given newsgroup cannot just get together all of a sudden and decide that
auction spam is welcome in that newsgroup.)"

One man's spam, is another's lunchean meat.

The reference is to auction posts of any kind, whether they are considered
spam or not is irrelevant and depends on each individual.

This was my point.

Auction posts of any kind are not welcome in theme groups, and by changing
this, even slightly, you'll cause even more grey areas then are now. Your
suggested rules and restrictions will be very easy to go around
(intentionally
or otherwise) and will cause even more confusion and friction than there is
now.

In what way?

I'll quote your original post and reply to that, if you don't mind:

"I suggest the pre-auction announcements should be allowed in all theme
groups, with the following provisos:

"3. All sets auctioned should be at least 3 years old - this will disallow
most clearance "box shifters"."

Three years might seem like an arbitrary number, and people will argue against
it... or they'll want to change it to 'any discountinued sets'...

Indeed. But many may consider "box shifters" OK.

"6. The initial post should only have the title "theme_name PRE AUCTION
ANNOUNCEMENT" - Nothing more."

Why?

To allow easy filtering.

"7. The auction post and terms should be pre-checked by lugnet.admin.council
to ensure it is "fair" & complies with points 1 to 6."

By doing this you're generating unneccessary work. The council is intended to
clarify grey areas and discuss topics that the community is unsure of - not to
check every auction announcement that comes up.

The 'rules'/provisos that you suggest will only cause more confusion. The more
complicated the rules you put on, the harder it is to enforce them and the
harder it is for newbies to understand them or the reasoning behind them.

I don't see any reason for changing the theme groups' charter. In your
original post, Scott, you did not give one reason for this. Why would we • want
this? If you have reasons, please mention them. Right now, I can't figure • out
any good things coming out of this other than the benefits of private • auction
sellers.

To ensure buyers are fully aware of what is available.

If buyers *want* to be aware of what's available, they can consciously go to
lugnet.market and search whatever they want to find.

If this change was to
come into action, it would put private auctions on a par with private sales.

No, it wouldn't. Sales or sales announcements aren't allowed in theme groups
either. They are just more tolerated when they *do* occur, and even then they
are usually directed to b-s-t.

(...) Like Jeff mentioned - it depends on the individuals, however I didn't hear ONE buyer - not one! - that would be glad to accept these posts in theme-groups. (...) Exactly - even more confusion.
