  lugnet.com upgrade/downtime/heads-up

This is a general "FYI" heads-up... The lugnet.com server is due for a slight overhaul to upgrade the OS from FreeBSD 2.1.7 to 2.2.7. When exactly this will occur is not set in stone, but I'll post more when I know more. Hopefully sometime in the (...) (25 years ago, 26-Jun-99, to lugnet.admin.general, lugnet.announce)

  Re: lugnet.com upgrade/downtime/heads-up

(...) Todd, Would this upgrade address some of LUGNET's performance issues? Cheers, - jsproat (25 years ago, 26-Jun-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

  Re: lugnet.com upgrade/downtime/heads-up

(...) Huh? Performance issues? That's new to me. Tell me more. No, as far as I'm aware, the upgrade won't address any speed issues that would make any noticeable difference... What type(s) of problems have you noticed? The server has only barely (...) (25 years ago, 26-Jun-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

  Re: lugnet.com upgrade/downtime/heads-up

(...) The only slowness I've noticed is while reading and posting news. Normally I zip from article to article, with even hundred line articles loading almost instantly. Sometimes, though, there are waits of up to 30-45 seconds, rarely longer. I've (...) (25 years ago, 26-Jun-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

  Re: lugnet.com upgrade/downtime/heads-up

(...) So life's pretty rough, huh? ;-) (...) That sort of delay can't be the server unless it's gone belly up or is suffering from some massive head wound, which hasn't ever happened AFAIK. (...) Yeah, that sounds a lot more like the culprit. (...) (25 years ago, 26-Jun-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

  Re: lugnet.com upgrade/downtime/heads-up

(...) Well, when they're working correctly, the DS-3 we have, along with our 6 T1's, make bandwidth ok. When the students are gone for the summer. When they're here sucking it all down, it still stinks. :) (...) Believe me, I'm more than happy to (...) (25 years ago, 26-Jun-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

  Re: lugnet.com upgrade/downtime/heads-up

(...) It's probably the same scenario that Mike Stanley is seeing, but I'm not so sure sometimes. I'm accessing LUGNET around the hours of 9 AM to 6 PM MDT, in Utah. I'm on a 100Mb LAN connected through Novell's Internet link, which is typically (...) (25 years ago, 28-Jun-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

  Re: lugnet.com upgrade/downtime/heads-up

(...) Thanks for the info. Yes, a traceroute could maybe help. If you could make a note of the exact time of day too, that would really help. I can check that against the server activity logs to see if anything unusual was happening at that time. If (...) (25 years ago, 28-Jun-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

  Re: lugnet.com upgrade/downtime/heads-up

While I'm not going to name any names, Your ISP's (alleged lack of) private peering is likely the culprit here. Todd's ISP is well peered, and I have never seen any performance problems from the 3 backbones I use regularly. KL (...) (25 years ago, 7-Jul-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

  Re: lugnet.com upgrade/downtime/heads-up

(...) By my ISP do you mean Qwest, the provider of our big pipe? If so, name names all you want - I know they suck, and the scary thing is they're buying up companies right and left. If you mean my actual ISP, which is my employer (I work for UTK (...) (25 years ago, 8-Jul-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

  Re: lugnet.com upgrade/downtime/heads-up

(...) (The above was quite a while back.) The OS upgrade is scheduled for sometime mid-tomorrow morning, hopefully around 9-10 a.m. EST. (...) I've been working proactively as a background task to head off any problems like this ahead of time so (...) (25 years ago, 29-Sep-99, to lugnet.admin.general, lugnet.announce)

  Re: lugnet.com upgrade/downtime/heads-up

(...) If you want to do a full backup (just in case the CD I burned turned up to have errors or get damaged - I'm paranoid) I'll be happy to grab it and burn it. (25 years ago, 29-Sep-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

  Re: lugnet.com upgrade/downtime/heads-up

Can you hold off on anything that would break the connection to the internet? My downloads of your tarballs will no doubt be running all nite long (I'm off to bed now...) We don't all have the kind of connectivity John M does. I have fiber in my (...) (25 years ago, 29-Sep-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

  Re: lugnet.com upgrade/downtime/heads-up

Never mind. They failed and there isn't time to try again at the speed available to me... (...) (25 years ago, 29-Sep-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

  Re: lugnet.com upgrade/downtime/heads-up

(...) Hrmmm.... worst case scenario - Lugnet crashes, I burn them on CD, you grab them from me? (25 years ago, 29-Sep-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

  Re: lugnet.com upgrade/downtime/heads-up

(...) OK, we're back up as planned. --Todd (25 years ago, 29-Sep-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

  Re: lugnet.com upgrade/downtime/heads-up

  Re: lugnet.com upgrade/downtime/heads-up

(...) I *have* got the shakes; I've been up all night. :-{ There's at least one thing I've discovered that's broken: The news-by-mail settings for large subscriptions -- the number of file descriptors is set too low by default...but it's fixable (I (...)   Re: lugnet.com upgrade/downtime/heads-up

(...) Well, the idea is to keep them independent as much as possible. If in some paranoid fantasy scenario, yours got corrupted during transmission in an undetectable way, my taking copies of those would not help. Better that I took an independent (...)
