JLUG - The Inherent Evil Agenda?(1)
With the on going comments, I refuse to sit idly and watch the same ppl that
told us to get our own place now complain that we have.
I must say, I find the criticism of JLUG absolutely hilarious. JLUG was first
started because there were a few (but very vocal) ppl here on Lugnet, that
wanted to preserve this place and in the pursuit, they kept telling other
members of Lugnet to get their own sandbox if they wanted their own rules.
Example: http://news.lugnet.com/admin/general/?n=12238
Now, I took that advice pretty seriously, but it is clear, some of you dont
seem very happy about it. We (Rosco and I) went and made our own sandbox, and
the way I see at it, JLUG has been nothing more than a sub-community of a
larger group of AFOL/ALEs. Never intended for super serious content. I have
always said, its like a great Brick Event.... Lugnet is the content, the event
itself, and JLUG is the fun we have back at the bar, after the event. (ie
Rocklands). Its place where some fans choose to share their humour be it
lighthearted, silly, immature or outrageous, they can post questionable or
controversial content if wanted, and sometimes even elude to naughty
behaviours and yes, in some extreme cases their more deviant sides. All of it
is pretty tame by my standards. Believe it or not, I am sure we could be a lot
worse! Our focus, fun. Sure occasionally we will talk about the brick, or the
latest news but there is no mandate to do that. Having a place to post/discuss
undesirable to Lugnet content, has kept some of that very content off this
very site. In fact, when requested, we have even hosted pictures of
questionable MOCs, to keep them off of Brickshelf.
I know I wanted a place where I could avoid conforming to community standards
and behaviours. Colouring within the lines and abiding by rules of acceptable
behaviour that werent set by nonpartisan minds is not my style. Basically I
was looking for a lighthearted place one could chat, have a laugh, and share a
bit of community spirit in a non-threatening and light hearted way. The only
solution I saw to that was to have a place where ppl were not being constantly
threatened (or requested) to edit their words or thoughts. Apparently that works
for some ppl, enrages others, and most curiously scares some.
Now over the past year we have been called some pretty great names...
Troublemakers Rabble-rousers Malcontents Elitist and the forum itself
has been referred to as a Resume Stain, Staging Area, The Pit of
Conspiracy, The Anti-Community Community and my personal favourites A Bunch
of Dreamy-Eyed Idealists in for a Rude Awakening and A Hiding Hole for
Misfits (as well as many other names that I can not print here). But frankly,
(without complaint, and with credit to Richie), it more like JLUG, the
Communitys Scapegoat ....hey, no skin of my back! Clearly a few of you feel
we have nothing better to do with our time, than to sit around and find ways to
destroy the community. Of course, there is one thing I dont understand, when
someone has a rant on Lugnet, no one blames Todd or Suz for that rant! If
someone does something questionable on CSF, you dont blame the forum! But in
some magical way, if anyone posts anything you dont like here, and they happen
to be a member of JLUG, all of a sudden, its a conspiracy to destroy the rest
of the community (or specific forums). Okay, dont get me wrong, I love a
conspiracy just as much as anyone else, but please, it needs to have a bit more
evidence than I have seen presented to actually have some plausibility. Also
the whole idea of this is so ironically funny considering our membership is
mostly made up of ppl that have been instrumental in BUILDING this community.
Lets take a sec and look at our active members... many of them contribute with
regularity in other parts of the community. We have some amazing builders that
have been well recognized for their contributions, we have LUG Presidents or
Founders, Community Reps, Curators and Moderators of other forums, Ambassadors,
and those that have contributed databases/resources etc.
We are not harbouring fugitives of the Lego world that can not manage to fit
into other places, (at least not many) but we do give them a voice, a voice that
is unmoderated. It doesnt take a genius to figure out that, that is the price
you pay to have a board without censorship. It takes all kinds, and I certainly
did not set up a site to please the masses. I do find it a bit unsettling
(although, I dont lose any sleep over it) that JLUG, being a scapegoat does
paint everyone of our members (the large percentage of which have never made
anything remotely resembling a trolling post here, or elsewhere) with the same
brush.
You can all believe what you want, but I have very little tolerance for
misrepresentations and basic generalities. The forum was set up for ppl that
wanted to speak freely, and I have fully embrace that. I did not seek out a
hand selected group of ppl to cause dissension in the ranks. People have left
and people have come, some participate and others dont, but any content that is
posted is their own content, it is their name that reside besides their words.
There is a price for everything, including a voice, and that cost is more than
bearable to me. The hate mail, public complaining and the name calling does not
concerned me, nor does it make me second guess my stance.
I have one last thing to say in closing, aside from announcing the general
opening of our site, I have not consciously used Lugnet as a place to generate
new members. So for those of you that continue to complain about our site, I
must thank you, cause every single time there is a ruckus about JLUG here our
membership goes up. Those of you most angry about our site have in turn become
best ambassadors of our site, keep up the good work, your every complaint
increases our post counts. NTNMA.
1. This is an heavily edit version of a post made by me, on JLUG when anti-JLUG
rumblings first appeared here.

| (...) Cheers to you both for doing your own thing and for doing it well. I see JLUG as an example of some natural evolution within a community. There was a need for a bar to hang on, and you built it. bravo. -Suz (19 years ago, 4-Apr-06, to lugnet.admin.general)
