Not interested in buying pieces, but I have also done the classified ad thing. About two years ago, I put an ad in the local paper "Buying Used LEGOs" and could have gone broke. I have found that I'm able to get a lot of scratches out of other parts with no ill effects. Now I'm not sure about clear or trans parts, though I don't see why not.. I've used a Centerline track cleaner for years with my N-Gauge trains. Their products are well designed and well made.
